At least it didn't give you 2000 10-rupee coins!

Which ATM was this, BTW?

I know icici and a few others have a 30 note max per transaction, I have managed to withdraw 25 and 30,000 ₹ a few times from Federal bank atm , I would be surprised if 100 notes wasn’t just journalistic license, or in non- nycank speek “ bullshit”

The cash came out of 2 transactions of 10,000 to make sure my plastic worked,it was a bit odd as I had never seen the note before.
Red ninja it really did happen,I am in Paharganj ,and much as I like a bit of”Journalistic licence” the sheer strangeness of every day life for eclipses a touch of bullshit.

The numbers game?

Yesterday, I went to the local ATM and...

(Have you noticed how it stats by saying "Retreiving your preferences," and then asks you to repeat them all? Stupid system)

...and it refused to speak to me except in a Northern language I couldn't even name. So I walked to the next nearest. I withdrew 40 500Rs notes from one machine, and 40 100Rs notes from the 100Rs notes only: Max 4,000Rs machine.

The hundreds were all the old 100Rs note that we know and love, but hey, there's a new one: it's purple.

Strange times indeed — India so easily makes a fool out of me , yes I forgot the golden rules — never assume anything — don’t expect consistency — tomorrow is another day.

I withdrew 20k at one shot two days ago. All 2000 rupee notes

This is normal in Hyderabad. Last time I withdrew 10k, all were 2000 rupee notes except five hundreds and one 500.

No, it is not the number of notes but amount. The max you can withdraw at one go is 20 thousand.

Maybe it’s my Aust debit card but since June this year the max I can score is ₹10,000 from any banks machine ( in Chennai) even my secret atm federal bank over the road from the Armenian church in Parrys refuses to release more than ₹10,000.
Maybe it’s time to get a local account and card !

The 20 thousand limit is for own bank account, for withdrawing from any other bank ATM's, the limit is 10 thousand in one go.

200 rupee notes.

I thought that the foreign-card limit had been 10k for some time? Just to make the most convenient way for travelers to put cash in their pockets harder and much more expensive.

If you can swing a local account, redninja, no second thoughts... Just do it!
