12 June - Flight to Delhi from Guwahati as per the route suggested by you. ( For public Transport, stick to Shillong-Guwahati highway)

Thank you Karikor. But am told its raining these days in Shillong, as it is in Guwahati for about a week now,oh damn. Please keep me posted on the current weather and the short-term forecast, though I'll keep tracking the weather web-sites now-onwards. Ufff, what an anti-climax now. May-June doesn't see too much of the rains, I think. But why now, lol.

Also spoke with someone in Shillong today for guide-facility in Cherrapunji.....pretty costly proposition, costs more than a deluxe room lol.

Rain Gods, spare our trip......its one which I've been planning and looking forward to for almost a year now.

Dont worry, hope you are lucky. It was raining last week non-stop. This week it has not been raining in the day time much. Hope it continues this way, ie raining only at night time.

You won't need guide in Sohra, Only for the Double Decker Living Roots Bridge trek (about 800-1000)

Thanks for that Karikor.
Now, you advised me to cover Mawsynram and Jakrem Hot Springs on 10 June, but they have been covered on 31 May. Or did you visualize that it wouldn't be possible for us to cover these places on 31 May.
Regarding the route suggested by you via Ranibari and Patharkhmah on 12 June, how is the route scenic could you drop a hint. Can we see parts of Bangladesh also from some stretch of the route. Are shared cabs available on this route?
And finally, do you think we would have covered all the points in Shillong, or did we miss out some spots that can be accommodated here and there.
Thank you so much brother.

You will not be able to cover mawsynram, jakrem, mawphlang and the David Scott trek on the same day. That's why I have added it on June 10th. As for going back to guwahati via patharkhmah and ranibari, you are travelling north, so you will not see bangladesh which is in the south. besides its better you drop the idea and take the normal route as there is no public transport in that route.Besides I am not very happy wit overall itinerary as day trips will only waste time. However you have already pointed out that you don't want to stay away from your ancestral house in shillong, so I really don't know. Even your 1st leg is confusing to me. After my inputs, please re draft your new itinerary so that I can understand and further improve upon it.

Well I feel my earlier itinerary seems to be more reasonable and less confusing, especially for the 1st leg-
27th - Reach Shillong. Halt
28th- Shillong. Visit school and old places. Halt
29th- Shillong local sight seeing. Halt
30th- Proceed to Sohra. Enroute visit Mawphlang Sacred Grove. do the David Scot Trek. Proceed to Sohra. Halt
31st- Sohra Sightseeing. Halt
1st- Sohra. Double Decker living roots bridge trek. Halt
2nd - Proceed to Mawlynnong. Halt
3rd- Checkout Dawki. Proceed to Shillong. Halt
4th- Catch flight from Guwahati

And for the second leg, if you are ready to not just do day trips, then a more reasonable itinerary would be in this fashion.
5th-Proceed to Mawthadraishan peak. Complete the trek. proceed to nongstoin. Halt
6th- Day trip to Nongkhnum.return to nongstoin. Halt
7th- From Nongstoin proceed to mawkyrwat via mawrangblang. From mawkyrwat, move towards nongnah and ranikor. Halt at ranikor.
8th- From ranikor proceed to balat, from balat to mawsynram. Check out caves in mawsynram. From mawsynram, proceed to jakrem hot springs. From jakrem hotsprings move towards laitlyngkot for shortcut to laitlum and smit. Proceed towards Thadlaskein. Halt
9th- Explore Jaintia hills. Halt
10th- Explore Jaintia hills. Afternoon proceed to shillong via shillong bypass road from mawryngkneng to umiam lake. Halt at shillong.
11th- Spend half day along Umiam Lake. Try out the Kayaking. Evening relax in shillong.halt
12th- if your going by public transport, take the normal shillong-guwahati road.

Anyway for all these places you will need to hire a vehicle and driver. Public transport is almost non-existant and are if available, timings will be unfavorable to you.

Fair enough Karikor.....but I need an extra 3rd full-day in Shillong I think in the first-leg I think, because I would spend a lot of time in Upper Shillong where we stayed.....and thats where all the nostalgia is. Upper Shillong is quite some way off from Shillong proper, so covering the site-seeing points together with visiting Upper Shillong wouldn't be really possible I think. Then covering my school will also be nostalgic and would require a lot of time. The school is huge, and I would be going inside as well to see the dormitory for boarders, the auditorium......lots of nostalgia here too. Thus, the extra third day in Shillong is imperative. You have given three days in Sohra which is as per my thinking as well, but the extra day in Mawlynnong.......this is where the catch is. I would like to halt in Shillong in lieu, and do Mawlynnong by way of a day-trip. By the way, where exactly is Mawlynnong located........can we do it while returning from Sohra.
Rest seems to be perfectly ok.

Now coming to the second part, I think it would be imperative and gentlemanly of me to stay with my relations full-time in this second stretch so that I am able to do some day-trips with them. I have my ancestral home in Shillong.....so coming to Shillong is never a problem for me, except for the cost of travel lol.As such, I would like to cover the better spots this time around in this second-leg, and maybe leave something for the next trip maybe later this year itself, or early next year. Shillong cannot be seen even in a month's time dear.......you need to spend a year to soak it in, to know the city,to be a part of the pines and the society there. "Shillong is my birth-right and I shall have it lol". You can well understand how much I am attached to Shillong........my roots are there, its only that I was transplanted in Delhi lol.

Fair enough, day trip is possible to mawlynnong provided you start early. So you can definitely slot in one more day for shillong before leaving for all these other places. As for upper shillong and shillong, its now more of an extension of the city. If you do shillong sightseeing, the tour will have to cover shillong peak view point, elephant falls and airforce museum which are all in upper shillong. Anyway, if time permits you can cover the laitlum canyons near smut about 25km from shillong on the 3rd day, after finishing sweet falls in happy valley. Coming back to mawlynnong, its the biggest attraction so far for meghalaya. Its attraction mainly lies in the way the local governance in the village is carried out. About 7 lakh tourists visit mawlynnong every year. As for route, you will have to take the shillong-sohra route after about 25km, you take a diversion to the left towards dawki. Mawlynnong will be about 70km from that diversion. So mawlynnong will be around 90-100km both from sohra and from shillong and will take 3 hours. Riwai single Decker root bridge is also next to mawlynnong. If time permits you can check dawki as well which is next to Bangladesh border.

Thank you Karikor.....noted the minute details and copied them out in my diary. Lets see how far I can go......fingers crossed on the second-leg though lol.During our stay in Shillong (I was a kid then though), I dont remember us having ever gone to Jaintia Hills though. I understand there's a lot to see in Shillong, but all in one trip is just impossible. Let me cover the major destinations first, i.e, Shillong city and Sohra, and if I miss out on some other hot-spots, there's always more opportunity in store for me in future. I would be coming to Shillong more often now, thats a given lol.
You have given me all the details, except one.....your contact number/mailing address. I wish to have you in my facebook as a personal friend, as I am no more a regular here in IndiaMike due to XYZ reasons which you know of, though I peep in once a while as a guest but no more as a member, unless absolutely required. IndiaMike is one of the best travel-sites of course, if not the best, there are no two opinions on that one though.
Thanks for all the assistance. Let me see what else I can ask you tomorrow, before catching out morning flight on Monday.
Thank you, thank you very much.

Well I am sure you can cover shillong, mawphlang (sacred fired, maybe not David Scott trek), sohra and mawlynnong for your first leg. Its the most basic for a shillong trip. As for 2nd leg, I understand your condition. My advice is check out these places on google earth or google map to understand what your facing at. As for my contact, you know sadly that its prohibited to share our contact details on India mike. Anyway do check out the meghalaya forum on tripadvisor.in
