Hello Experts,

I need your advice in finalizing the itinerary for my Meghalya trip for 8 days. I would be travelling with my wife and 2-year kid. I am excluding Double decker trek as I have problem in my knee. I am arriving on 19th Jan morning and I have my flight back on 27th Jan morning. This is my itinerary-

Day 1-- Guwahati to Shillong-- (3 hours drive)-- Visit the Umiam lake on the way- Overnight stay in Shillong

Day 2- Local sightseeing in Shillong- Lady Hydari park, Laitlum, Ward's lake, Air force museum and don bosco museum- Stay in Shillong

Day 3-- shillong to Mawphlang, Mawsynram and Mawlyngbna (3 hour drive)-- Visit Mawphlang sacred forest and Mawjymbuin caves on the way- Overnight stay in Mawlyngbna

Day 4-- Mawlyngbna to cherapunjee- (3 hours drive)-- Overnight stay in Cherapunjee

Day 5-- Stay in Cherapunjee and Visit Mawsmai caves, Nohkalikai falls, Mawdkok dympep valley, Arwah cave, seven sisters cave and Sa-i-maka park

Day 6-- Cherapunjee to Mawlynnong and Dawki- (3 hours drive)-- Boating on Dawki river and Overnight stay in Mawlynnong

Day 7-- Mawlynnong to Jowai- (3 hours drive)-- Visit Krangshuri falls on the way and Overnight stay in Jowai

Day 8-- Jowai to Guwahati - (4 hours drive)-- Visit Kamakhya tempple in Guwahati and Overnight stay in Guwahati

Question-
1) I have sufficient time for meghalya to be covered in 8 days. Should I also include Kaziranga in this 8 days trip?
2) Please let me know if there is any place that I am missing here
3) Please also let me know if there is any place which needs lots of walking and I should exclude it, considering the problem in my knee and since I am having a kid.
4) I am travelling to Jowai with the assumption that Krang suri falls would be having sufficient water in it. Is it worth to include Jowai in the itinerary?
5) Since in January, most of the waterfalls would be dry, let me know which ones to include and which can be excluded

Thanks in advance.

I visited in march last year and there was enough water in krang shuri but quite a few others were dry.

I wont include kaziranga in the same trip.
Mawphanlur is something i missed, but wanted to visit and could be something you can explore
Personally, i would have preferred to skip shillong and spend more time in the villages, as they definitely are great. Shillong has that tourist spot kind of feeling, but then everybody has different preferences. the place i loved the most were the nongriat village and the shnongpdeng village.
Any reason to include Jowai? you might skip that and reach shillong same day, that way you save a day if you reach mawlyngbna / mawphlang on first day itself

Guwahati- Mawphanlur-Mawlyngbna-Mawphlang-Sohra-Shnongpdeng-Shillong-Guwahati could be your altered tourney, and you can choose and pick your destinations

Thanks @pink_vagabond for your feedback

- Do you suggest me to also include Mawphanlur? I heard it is a nice location. But there is nothing much to see there and only one can relax there. Is that true?

- Should I skip other waterfalls in Jan and only include Krang shuri falls?

- I am staying one night in Maylonng and another one in Jowai. Should I stay in shnongpdeng rather? The reason why I wanted to visit Jowai is because it would be after Krang shuri after Dawki. Cani stay in Shnongpdeng rather and return back to Shillong?

Mawlynnong was a clean village but all meghalaya is clean, i just spent an hour in mawlynnong and moved on to shnongpdeng. An evening in shnongpdeng on the river bed, sitting on the boulders followed by campfire, bliss. I started from nongriat, the trek up, followed by mawdok dympep point, then on to mawlynnong and then to shnongpdeng. A pretty long day, but spent the entire day in shnongpdeng and my kids still remember that day as the best of the trip. Given you dont have to trek up and can start from sohra, i would suggest an early start, visit a few waterfalls / mawlynnong on the way to shnongpdeng. i stayed two nights at shnongpdeng, but you can move out after lunch to shillong

Haven't been to mawphanlur but pics by karikor and a few others on the web indicated a very pretty place, but no idea whether it warrants an extra day there.

You should go through a few travelogues here and decide how you want to go about it. Karikor is the expert in the region and he should be able to help you out better

Thanks pink vagabond. After your suggestion, I am planning to make two changes in my itinerary-

1) To stay in shnongpdeng instead of Mawlynnong on Day 6
2) and not stay in Jowai.

This leaves me with an extra day in hand. Where do you suggest me to spend that one day? I personally do not want to stay in Mawphlang as there is only one place to stay there. Any suggestions here?

Thanks in advance

Day1: reach mawphanlur
Day2: mawphanlur and over to mawlyngbna after lunch
Day3: mawlyngbna and over to sohra after lunch
Day4: sohra
Day5: shnongpdeng, via mawlynnong
Day6: shnongpdeng
Day7: leave early and reach shillong via krang shuri
Day8: shillong cathedral and over to guwahati

Alternatively, you can either skip mawphanlur or leave shnongpdeng after lunch if you want to do some sight seeing in shillong

Thanks pink vagabond for your suggestions.

1) Can I do Mawphanlur in a day trip from Shillong? What all I Can cover on the way if I travel from Shillong to Mawphanlur?
2) According to your plan we need to stay in shnongpdeng for 2 nights. Is there anything to visit near it or only relax kind of place?

I think kari did Mawphanlur as a day trip, but anyways if you have to head to mawlyngbna next day, you can move over from Mawphanlur, as you save some time.

Shnongpdeng is a relax kind of place, there are a few waterfalls on the way from pynsurla, which you can cover through short treks, i think. We did not do those due to paucity of time on day 1, and wanted to just swim / snorkel on day 2, followed by a relaxing time in the evening on the stones. You can just head over to the tamabil border and may be see bangladesh border up close, but none of us were fans of those places

I was in mawlyngbna on Sunday. The zip lining was closed. Everything else worked there, but generally people go to church so there would be some issues especially in the morning

Thanks pink Vagabond. After your suggestions i have made some chnages to my itinerary. I have not included Mawphanlur on 19th and 20th Jan as the Tourist guest house is full on 19th and would not be open on 20th sunday. Can you please look into it once and provide your feedbacks-

Jan 19-- Guwahati to Shillong-- (3 hours drive)-- Visit the Umiam lake on the way- Overnight stay in Shillong.
Q- What else can be covered on this day?

Jan 20- Local sightseeing in Shillong- Shillong peak, Lady Hydari park, Laitlum, Ward's lake, Air force museum and don bosco museum- Stay in Shillong
Q- Any other place can i cover near to shillong on day 2?

Jan 21- Shillong to Maphlaur - stay in Maphlaur
Q- Is there any place i can visit on the way?

Jan 22- Maphlaur to Mawsynram and Mawlyngbna (3 hour drive)-- Visit Mawphlang sacred forest and Mawjymbuin caves on the way- Overnight stay in Mawlyngbna

Jan 23-- Mawlyngbna to cherapunjee- (3 hours drive)-- Visit Garden of caves on the way- Overnight stay in Cherapunjee

Jan 24-- Stay in Cherapunjee and Visit Mawsmai caves, Nohkalikai falls, Mawdkok dympep valley, Arwah cave (Hire a guide here), seven sisters cave (Do not go to Seven sister falls, there is not enough water there) and Sa-i-maka park

Jan 25-- Cherapunjee to Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng - (3 hours drive)-- If time permists cover Mawryngkhang rock, Boating on Dawki river in Shnongpdeng and Overnight stay in Shnongpdeng

Jan 27-- Shnongpdeng to Guwahati- (3 hours drive)-- Visit Krangshuri falls on the way and Overnight stay in Guwahati

Does this itinerary looks better?

I hope you are taking a private vehicle for the trip? the driver will help you out with the distance and travel times. Shnongpdeng to Guwahati is quite a long drive and definitely not 3 hours.

What time does your flight land in Guwahati? May be day 1 you can move straight to Mawlyngbna as long as you reach by noon, that way you spend that day to reach farther than shillong and do shillong while returning. That way you can leave from shillong according to your flight time or reach early to guwahati and then stopover at umiam or kamakhya temple on the way back
Next day after lunch move on to mawphanlur.
Then mawphanlur to cherrapunji. spend two nights there, one day for sight seeing and next day on to shnongpdeng. Shnongpdeng if you leave after lunch, you can visit krangshuri and laitlum on the way to shillong

Another thought is that you can do mawlyngbna and mawphanlur as day trips from Mawphlang, which negates the need of stay at TN's at those two locations. you just may have to leave early in that case

Thanks Pink Vagabond.

Yes i would be having my own vehicle. You are right that the Shnongpdeng to Guwahati route is around 5 hours. The reason why i was staying in Jowai initially was because i do not want to travel much in a single stretch considering i have a toddler.

Can i stay my first night and last night in Shillong to avoid continous drive for longer hours to Guwahati?

If that is so, i can update my itinerary accordingly.

Thanks in advance.
