Hello everybody!

I am planning a trip to NE covering Shillong, Sohra, Kaziranga, Guwahati from Feb 12 to Feb 19 with my elderly parents and younger brother. We want to soak in the essence of the place and the natural beauty (not anything too hectic), but are constrained in not being able to do any rough trekking due to health reasons.

After going through many threads here especially the advises given by Karikor, this is what I have roughly planned:

Feb 12: Reach Guwahati at 9 am. Proceed from Airport to Shillong in hired vehicle (I intend to hire a vehicle for d entire duration unless its possible to change vehicle at some point to save money). Enroute visit Umiam lake. Evening leisurely shopping at Police bazaar. Halt.

Feb 13: Early morning go to Shillong Peak for sunrise, return to hotel for breakfast. If there is nothing else to do thn after B/F move to Shongpdeng, Dawki (do boating). I am not sure what else to do here. Thinking of night halt at Shongpdeng or Mawlynnong.

Feb 14: Mawlynnong sight seeing. Single root bridge. Skywalk. Move to Sohra. Night halt at Sohra.

Feb 15: Sohra sight seeing. Move to Guwahati bypassing Shillong, may be via Mawphlong. May please advise as I am not clear about the places to visit here. Night halt at Guwahati.

Feb 16: Go to Kaziranga. Feb 17: Safari at Kaziranga.

Feb 18: after B/F, go to Guwahati. Evening Brahmaputra river cruise, Navagraha temple etc, shopping at Fancy bazaar.
Feb 19: Kamakhya temple. Lunch. Flight at 6 pm.

Would welcome any suggestion you can give regarding the itinerary and the must visit places, and places we can skip considering the time of the year. Also, can you please suggest some reliable cab agency (contact no.) who can function as our guide as well. I have not yet booked any places to stay, so suggestions on the same will be very helpful. I wanted to stay a night at a treehouse (if possible), if you are aware of any place may please share.

Thanks,

Hey Trisha,

Your Itinerary seems quite fine for you with your family. As you mentioned leisurely so would suggest some additions likewise.

On Feb 13, Once with Shillong Peak, you can visit Laitlum, which is a little explored canyon 4 kms from Shillong. It's a vast meadow surrounded by mountains and clouds.

I would suggest to spend a night at Mawlynong and not Sohra, because of the amazing Home cooked food at the Homestays in Mawlynong with a chance to stay at the cleanest village. Plus the night at Mawlynong is blissful

Hence, maybe visit Sohra First, as there are a couple of caves and few waterfalls which can be covered in the day. I would have suggested Nongriat too in Sohra, but it's a trek.

On Feb 14, Sightseeings at Sohra. Move to Mawlynong at Night

Feb 15, Visit the Single root Bridge, Skywalk etc. Move to Mawphlong and reach guwahati by night.

For Food in Shillong: Try Jadoh for sure for local cuisine. and Munchies, their burgers are amazing [The best beef burger Patties I have had in India]
The rest looks good.

Have a great trip!

Thanks chasing_stars for your advice.

I am not clear how much is doable in one day for Feb 13. I want to visit both Dawki and Shongpdeng, plus I read someone say that night stay at Shongpdeng is very beautiful which is why I was thinking of halting there for night. Also, I wanted to stay at Mawphlong but I have got only 3 days and 2 nights. Is it possible to somehow include Mawphlong night stay in the itinery. Also, i am wondering whether I will skip Sohra since we will not be able to do the Double decker bridge and water level in the waterfalls are also not expected to be much considering the time of the year.

Any help in finalizing the itinery will be very helpful.

Also, can anyone please share some reliable travel agency number for the entire trip and suggestions for places to stay.

Thanks in advance.

trisha,

I would not exclude Sohra as such, just for the caves. You will find just a few easily accessible caves in the state and Sohra has a couple of them.

Trisha:

Your plan looks good for Feb 13 even with addition of Laitlum (with chasing_stars suggestion). I'd suggest to not go for boating at Dawki. You can just halt for 5 minutes and click photographs of the emerald green water below, from the road above. Shnongpdeng if I remember correct is about 30 minutes from Dawki. It has relatively lesser crowd and boating there is worth every penny. They charge 100 Rs (inclusive of life waist jacket) per person and the boat ride lasts for about 30 minutes.

Night stay at Shnongpdeng might be a good option for adventurers looking forward to spend the night in tents at riverside. However, in your case, you may have to opt for bamboo house style home stays which are close by. From my personal liking, I didn't find the climate at Shnongpdeng as good as it was in Sohra. Also, Sohra has a magical ambiance which is hard to find elsewhere

On the vehicle front, I'd suggest to hire a car (usually Sedans) from outside Guwahati airport to drop you till Shillong. They charge 2000 Rs for a car with 4 passengers and doesn't require prior booking. And for the rest of your travel within Meghalaya it is a good idea to hire a car from and till Shillong. Karikor can please add some points here.

And since you're wishing to spend a night at Mawphlang, if you're fine with letting go of witnessing sunrise from Shillong peak on Feb 13, you can directly proceed to MaplePine farm on Feb 12 and spend the night there.

Following is the new itinerary considering the above points --

Feb 12: Reach Guwahati and proceed to Shillong. Shillong local sight seeing afternoon. Night at MaplePine.

Feb 13: Visit the Sacred forest at Mawphlang. Drive to Shnongpdeng stopping at Dawki for a quick photo shoot. Proceed to Shnongpdeng for boating and also a short visit to Bangla border at Tambail, Skywalk at evening (the plains from atop looks better at this time of the day). Night stay at Mawlynnong.

Feb 14: Mawlynnong sight seeing and visit the single root bridge. Proceed to Sohra (takes about 3 hours), local sight seeing (few places). Halt at Sohra.

Feb 15: Sohra local sight seeing (other remaining places from previous day) and proceed to Guwahati. Go for the sunset cruise (choose the upper deck and also, don't go for sundown cruise).

/*Rest of the itinerary remains unchanged*/

Yes, it is a picturesque waterfall! Rainbow falls is (almost) a two hour trek from the double decker root bridge at Nongriat.
