Hey Guys,

I'm leaving from Mumbai tomorrow morning for an 8-day-trip to Meghalaya. Our flight lands in Guwahati at around noon tomorrow and our plan was to catch a cab on the same day and reach Cherrapunji.

However, we are told that due to the reported 24 hour bandh (strike) in Meghalaya, starting 5 AM tomorrow (20th May), travel from Guwahati to Shillong or Cherrapunji may not be possible. Another cab driver tells us that several tourists are currently stuck in the area.

"NGOs and the United Democratic Party, which is a coalition partner in the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance government, have called a 48-hour bandh on Tuesday to protest against the killing of the four villagers and the government’s failure to resolve the boundary issue," the Indian Express reported on May 17.

"Meghalaya is set to see three shutdowns in a row beginning from Tuesday to protest police firing that killed four people at the disputed Langpih village... National Highways No.40 and 44, the lifelines for landlocked Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur and southern Assam, are likely to be affected by the shutdowns," Hindustan Times said May 17.

While we're in no mood to cancel our plans, we're just trying to get more information / advise on the matter. If you're reading this from the region, or have been there recently, please relate your experience!

Cheers,
PPP

I would say that avoid that area for some time. A friend of mine was stuck in Manipur as the trains were not running last week. He was in Manipur but the problem is that terrorists Baptists of Nagaland are asking for major areas from Manipur, Meghalaya and other adjoining states and after that of course they want independence. Wait until the situation is resolved.

According to The Telegraph of Kolkata the bandh for tomorrow has been postponed. The twelve-hour bandh today has passed off peacefully says the article. It looks as if you can travel as planned to Meghalaya.

A suggestion: Telephone Denis Rayan at the Cherrapunjee Resort on 03637-244218/19/20 to check what is actually happening.

Enjoy your travels!
