28th Dec- Nongriat (Nongriat - Serene homestay). Mr. Byron said he may be able to arrange some accommodation if I tell him a day in advance. Leave 6 am to catch cab to Sohra market then taxi to laitlyngkot (200/-). then another taxi to Dawki (200/-).
This is a day in the itinerary (both yours and mine), that I'm super confused about. Glad that you could find out some information for the journey from Sohra to Dawki. My question is, when will you leave Serene home-stay to catch the 6 AM cab to Sohra? Citing facts from Karikor's TR, it is a 2 hours trek from Nongriat to Tyrna and __ hours (requesting Karikor to help fill the blank) from Tyrna to Mawsahew.

I'm sorry the village name is not Mawsahew. I forgot it's name. Anyway it's a junction on the road from Sohra to Laitkynsew and to Mawlong and one road leading to Tyrna. It will be about 2-3km from Tyrna village

30th Dec- Tyrchi Falls - Laitlum - Shillong - Transport from Shnongpdeng to Shillong ? Shilong sightseeing -- whatever is left of it.
After having checked reviews and photographs of Tyrchi Falls anf Laitlum, I'm so tempted to go visit both these places How do you plan to cover these two? I assume that there are no buses / sumo.

Thanks again for the inputs, Karikor. But wouldn't it add another extra day in the itinerary? The current outline was to end Day 4 in Nongriat and begin Day 5 with the onward journey to Dawki. Please give some ideas to mitigate this.

I have left Mawlynbna and Tyrchi out from your itinerary as you were having plans for Guwahati as well and you had lesser days. So obviously you are not having the same itinerary as Sourav. However if you do find time, you can always catch a taxi/bus from shillong to Smit and from Smit hire a taxi to Laitlum on 27th

AK,

You're itinerary is more or less complete.

Sourav,

You need to decide whether you want to modify the itinerary .

Super duper thanks karikor.
I guess it's time that you write a whole book on Meghalaya !!
No words to thank you.

Yes I did call the number for Mawlynnong, they asked me to call back a day earlier for confirmations.
As for proceeding to Mawlongbna on 24th, I thought it me be good fun in Shillong as it will be Christmas eve (too greedy...don't want to loose out on anything !!! :-))

Ok, so even I am backpacking from 23 to 27.
Right now at guwahati for a conference. I will read up this entire thread, just wanted to say hi

I have no plan as such
I just have one possible booking at mawsynram
Here is the tentative schedule
23 : guwahati to shillong, halt
24 : shillong to cherrapunji halt
25 : cherrapunji to mausinram , halt
26 : mausinram to shillong, shillong halt
27 : shillong to guwahati, flight at 2pm

Or
23: guwahati to shillong halt
24s shillong to mawphlang halt//but maplepine has no availability,
25; mawphlang to mausinram halt
26: mawsynram to shillong halt
27; shillong to guwahati, flight at 2pm

I like the second one a lil better because its more relaxed , but I don't know where to stay in mawphlang

Anyway I will go back.to my room in a few hours and scour this thread and respond back.again.

Hi Karikor,

If I do not get a bus to Mawlongbna on 25th morning then I will stay put in Shillong and try to walk the whole city (I like walking in the hills).I wanted to visit the Fossil park in Mawlongbna but maybe I will drop that. Maybe I will skip Mawphlang and the Scott trail and go straight from Mawlongbna to Sohra. What is your opinion on that ? I wanted to be in Shillong for the Christmas eve.

Also I am a pork lover and can you please suggest where i Shillong and elsewhere I can get authentic Garo/Khasi/Jantia crusines ?

Thanks Karikor. No, the confusion is not in including Laitlum. The confusion is in this part: as per my current itinerary, on Day 4, the halt is at Serene in Nongriat. And for Day 5, the agenda is -- trip to Dawki. So, is it possible to trek back to Tyrna and then head to Dawki on Day 5? But as you suggested in post #24, it is wise to head back to Shillong and halt there on Day 5 and then head to Dawki the day after that. By doing so, wouldn't there be a cascading one day delay in the entire plan from day 5 till the end of trip (with reference to current itinerary)?

Airbnb home stay at Mawsynram for 25,

No particular reason as to why mawsynram, just because I wanted to as a kid.

I want to skip the the Christmas crowd in shillong. So the idea is to go to a place without marked tourist attractions, someplace where I can just stay and enjoy a weekend , I am rather lazy.

This is my schedule yet

23 morning guwahati to shillong
24 shillong to place A
25 place A to place B
26 - B to Shillong, explore shillong , halt
27 - morning shillong to guwahati , flight at 2pm

So I need A and B , they need to be well connected by buses, with cheap food and lodging.

Where are the options I can think of
A - mawphlang , B mawsynram
Or
A - cherrapunji, B Dawkins
Or
Something else

Also A and B can be the same place aswell

But the point is I do not know if there are buses, and cheap hotels on the places , as online it's all booked

Show me what you have in mind for your final itinerary?

You have various local food stalls khasi/jaintia dotted all over the city. Any place which has a signboard 'Hangne die ja' will be a local food stall. However you may try the numerous Jadoh stalls inside Iewduh market or you can try at Trattoria in Police Bazaar and Jadoh at Donbosco point in Laitumkhrah.
Pork items to be sampled- Jadoh sniang ( Khasi Biryani cooked with pork) , Dohsniang neiiong ( Pork in seseme seed), Doh khleh sniang ( Boiled pork salad), Dohjem sniang ( Pig offals), Dohnud sniang ( Pig liver), Dohthad sniang ( Smoked pork), Syrwa Sniang ( Pork soup), Dohsniang kylla ( Pork curry), etc.

AK,

By doing so, wouldn't there be a cascading one day delay in the entire plan from day 5 till the end of trip (with reference to current itinerary)?

To solve your dillema what you can do is finish your Sohra sightseeing by mid day on day 3 and trek down the same day to Nongriat after lunch. Then on Day 4 you can trek back up to Sohra and catch the last cab to Shillong. Then Day 5 and henceforth will be streamlined.

Also keep in mind, as per Souravs info, on day 5, you can trek back up to Sohra, proceed to Laitlyngkot and from there descend down to Dawki/Shnongpdeng
