7 Nov - Reach Guwahati at 11.45 and proceed to Shillong. Shillong sight seeing . Halt
Umiam lake, Don Bosco Museum, Golf course, Wards Lake and cafe hopping.

This is fine.

8 Nov - Proceed to Sohra. Sightseeing on the way. Halt at CHR
Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint, Garden of Caves, Wah Kaba falls,Nohkalikai falls, Mawsmai cave. Halt

You can add Dain Thlen Falls and replace Mawsmai cave with Arwah cave.

9 Nov - Trek to Double decker root bridge

This is Fine. Remember Tyrna to Nongriat is 1.5hours. Nongriat to Rainbow falls is 2.5 hrs and Nongriat to Nohkalikai falls is 5 hours

10 Nov - Sohra - Mawlynnong - Dawki - Shnongpdeng. Halt at Shnongpdeng
This is fine.

11 Nov - Shnongpdeng - Jowai - Krangshuri falls - Jowai. Halt at Jowai
Krangshuri falls, Syndai cave, Thlumuwi stone bridge and falls

12 Nov - Jowai - Mawphlang - Halt at Mawphlang

Mawphlang Sacred Groves, Symper Rock, Mawlyngbna village, Krempomskei cave, sea urchin fossils.

It will be more sensible to keep Mawphlang and Mawlyngbna before doing Sohra. Shillong to Sohra, Sohra to Shnongpdeng. Shnongpdeng to Jowai and then from Jowai to come back to Mawphlang does not make sense at all.

13 Nov - Mawphlang - Shillong - Guw. Halt Guw

Shillong peak, Elephant Falls, Laitlum.

Jowai can be kept last. Then from Jowai can proceed straight to Guwahati.

14 Nov - Kamakhya Temple
Fly back to Bangalore

Hi Karikor,

Mawphlang is squeezed in at the end since i had a spare day. It wasnt a part of my initial schedule. Also, availability CHR was also a factor on determining dates for Sohra.

Is Mawphlang a must do.. will it be to crapmped with this schedule? I dont mind apending an extra day at Jowai and exploring a little more.

i am still in two minds about the DDRB trek. while i want to do the entire stretch till nokhalikai, not sure if time is enough. so do i have to come back from rainbow falls to nongriat and then trek to nokhalikai.

thanks

well like i said, Mawphlang was never in my schedule. So it was Shillong to Sohra and then further. And since CHR was close to tyrna and had fantastic reviews.. went ahead and booked it. Infact, CHR was booked even before my flight tickets. So there you go.

coming to my earlier doubt -
1. Is Mawphlang a must do.. will it be to cramped with this schedule? should i spend an extra day at Jowai and exploring a little more.
2. while i want to do the entire stretch frm tyrna till nokhalikai, not sure if time is enough. so do i have to come back from rainbow falls to nongriat and then trek to nokhalikai

Yes it is. Anyway nothing much to see in Jowai that would require an entire day.

Sohra sightseeing will take atleast half a day.

From Mawkdok there is a small shortcut to Laitlyngkot via Kyrdemkhla. Will save you about 7-8km. Besides kyrdemkhla is a popular picnic spot for locals .

And do Sohra sightseeing on 8th itself.

Hi Karikor, thanks for your contacts of taxi. i was able to get a decent deal.

a few questions though - my wife is a vegetarian and me a hard core non veg. while i would like to try local khasi food, are there good options for veg as well. my wife is also fond of momos, so any local place that serves good veg momo. and where do i get good pork momos.

actually i am a foodie and would like to try out all types of cuisine. any recomendations

Veg khasi food will be limited to rice dal fried veggies and Salad. Now non veg food has more options.

Here is to give you a run down of khasi food -

Ja - Rice
Doh - Meat
Jhur - Vegetables
Phon - Boil
Syrwa - soup
Kylla - curry
Sdieh - fried
Khleh - salad
Thad - smoked
Shain - minced
Dai - Dal
Doh syiar - Chicken
Doh sniang - Pork
Doh Masi - Beef
Doh Blang - Mutton
Doh Kha - Fish
Doh Jem - Offals
Doh nud - Liver
Doh Khyllai - Kidney
Doh Saw dkhot - mix of various Organs
Snam - Blood

a. Rice
Ja lieh - Plain rice
Jadoh - A khasi take on Biryani; you have options such as Jadoh syiar or Jadoh sniang or Jadoh Kha or Jadoh Kha or Jadoh snam
Jastem - Rice cooked with tumeric
Ja neiiong - Rice cooked with sesame seeds

b. Meat
Doh Syiar - Chicken ; Options are Doh syiar kylla, Doh syiar syrwa, Doh shain syiar, Doh khleh syiar, Dohjem syiar, Dohnud syiar, Doh syiar neiiong
Doh Sniang - Pork; Options are Doh sniang kylla, Doh sniang syrwa, Doh shain sniang, Doh khleh sniang, Dohjem sniang, Dohnud sniang, Doh sniang neiiong, Doh Khyllai sniang, Doh Thad sniang, Doh saw dkhot sniang
Doh Blang - Mutton; Options are Doh blang kylla
Doh Kha - Fish; Options are Doh kha sdieh, Doh kha Kylla, Doh shain dohkha, Doh kha syrwa

c. Vegetables
Jhur - Vegetable; Options are Jhur syrwa, Jhur Sdieh, Jhur Khleh

d. Dal
Dal - Dai; Options are Dai phon, dai kylla and dai neiiong

The best places in Shillong to have local khasi food are in the tea stalls in offices and the Jadoh shops in Iew Duh/Bara Bazaar

Other places where you can try Khasi/Jaintia local cuisine are :

Tratorria - Police Bazaar
Jadoh - Don Bosco square, Laitumkhrah
Alelang - Lower Lachumiere
You & I Arts cafe - Mawroh (Khasi snacks)
Kong Da's shop in downtown Nongpoh
Local Jadoh stalls in Mawlai area
Thangkhiew Jadoh stall in Umsning
Kharbithai Jadoh stall in Umsning on the Mawhati road
Local bhoi food at Umden Travellers Nest.

But different regions of Khasi and Jaintia hills will have different ways of preparation. The Jaintias predominantly use sesame in their preparation.

Now apart from the local Khasi food, you will find Naga, Manipuri, Bengali, Tibetan, South Indian, Marwari, apart from the normal North Indian, Chinese and Continental fare.
