I went through a few suggestions posted by Karikor, and other members, then I picked this one to customize for myself.

Day 1: Train from Kolkata
Day 2: Reach Guwahati by 9.30am. Stay for the day. And visit Kamakhya temple.
Day3: Guwahati to shillong
Day 4: Shillong sightseeing including Laitlum
Day 5: Shillong to Sohra including Mawphlang Sacred Groves. Sohra sightseeing. Halt
Day 6- Double Decker Trek. Halt
Day 7: Sohra - Mawlynnong - Shnongpdeng. Halt
Day 8: Shnongpdeng - Amlarem (Krangsuri)- Jowai-Guwahati
Day 9: Flight from Guwahati, around 12 noon

I will visit there in March, with my family. No. of members will be 6, including 2 senior citizens and one child (5yrs). Please suggest if I have chosen the right one.

There is no hard constraint in budget, it will be 10-12k per head approx. I

I will book a car for the whole trip, as suggested in almost all the suggestion, so a contact of a cab driver is also I will be looking for, soon.

Questions:
1. Umiam lake possible on Day 2?
2. Please suggest the places in between Shillong, sohra and Shnongpdeng, so that i can browse and plan
3. Do we need to travel too much in Day 8, as map suggests, then we can move to some other place enroute jowai on Day 7 itself, if that is advisable.

Suchintya, why don't you proceed to Shillong on Day 2 itself. Umiam lake very much possible.

2. Please suggest the places in between Shillong, sohra and Shnongpdeng, so that i can browse and plan
You have lots of time, we can further improve the itinerary. Please have a look at Suparna Acharya's itinerary and we can build up from that.

3. Do we need to travel too much in Day 8, as map suggests, then we can move to some other place enroute jowai on Day 7 itself, if that is advisable.
Yes travel will be too much. I suggest halting the night at Jowai or Thadlaskein.

Since you have plenty of days to plan, I am sure we can do it well.

Thumbs up

1. Suchintya, why don't you proceed to Shillong on Day 2 itself. Umiam lake very much possible.
Kamakhya temple is one of the highest priorities for my parents. Hence, I kept a full day for secured and hassle free visit to the temple.
I will move to shillong , if it is completed, by lunch.

2. Please have a look at Suparna Acharya's itinerary and we can build up from that
Yes, I went through a part of Suparna Acharya's Travelouge, it's pretty informative, and beautifully written in detail. I will go through the rest for sure

3. I suggest halting the night at Jowai or Thadlaskein

I have change my itinerary a bit, and looking for hotel options these days. Is it possible to move to Jowai same day, via Dawki , from mawlynnong. In that case I am looking to include Kaziranga too in this itinerary.

March 10: Train from Kolkata
March 11: Reach Guwahati by 9.30am. Stay for the day. And visit Kamakhya temple (5.30pm close).
March 12: Guwahati to shillong. Sightseeing, including laitlum. Night stay shillong
March 13: Shillong to Sohra including Mawphlang Sacred Groves. Sohra sightseeing. Night stay sohra
March 14: Sohra - Mawlynnong. Night stay at Mawlynnong
March 15- Mawlynnong to Jowai. Sightseeing at Dawki. Reach Jowai . night stay at Jowai
March 16: Jowai to kaziranga.
March 17: Go for a morning safari, then reach Guwahati by evening.
March 18: Flight from Guwahati, around 12 noon

Hotels till date I shortlisted for booking,

cherapunjee hotels:
Sohra plaza
Coniferous resort

Mawlynnong hotel:
Ha La I Trep
Ha La Tyngkong

Jowai Hotel:
CTC Orchid Inn

shillong :
Hill top chetau

Hi Suchintya,

a trek to DDRB at nongriat is not some thing to miss. Also mawlynnong has nothing much to offer. Instead head from Sohra to Shnonpdeng and stay there for the night.

If safari is what you are looking at, you can opt for Pobitora instead of Kaziranga. This will involve lesser travelling.

Cheers

Point noted. Thinking to skip mawlynnong stay.

I think DDRB will take a whole day to cover. Is it? I personally would really like to do that. As my parents and other family members may get bored , I was thinking to skip. Any suggestion how can I make the both ends meet? In that case I would have to increase one day in sohra.

Thanks Karikor, it's just a collective glimpse of all the inputs you and other members provided here in this forum. I am looking for a cab to contact for the whole trip.
From the past experience, i really believe that he will be someone who will make our journey beautiful.
Please refer if anyone got some numbers.

I don't have any particular choice. but it should be comfortable for six persons.

From the past threads and links present here. I found Bimal Modak's number. I was thinking to give him a call.

Yes, talked with him. And I am glad he's available
he was asking to do Kaziranga, but I have thought of to do Pobitora this time, in place of Kaziranga.
