Hi,

Kindly suggest if the following itinerary is feasible for Meghalaya in the month of August.

Our flight will reach Guwahati at around 8:00 A.M. on August 12.

August 12: Guwahati to Barapani to Shillong- sightseeing, over night stay

August 13: Leave for Mwlynnong-check in-sightseeing, Dawki and nearby

August 14: Leave for Cherrapunji- check in- sightseeing-

August 15: Caves- where?

August 16: Leave for someplace in between Nongkhnum river island, Mawthadraishan and nongriat- check in- Jakram hotsprings, Nongkhnum island

August 17: Nongriat trek

August 18: Mawthadraishan ,mawphlang, david scott trail- stay at mawphlang

August 19: Move towards Smit village, Canyons- reach guwahati airport by 3:00-3:30 P.M.

Questions:

1. mode of travel- Are local buses suitable? I've read somewhere that MTDC has bus services and sightseeing trips for shillong and Cherrapunji- are these good or is it better to explore on your own. How else to travel? Cabs?

2. Accomodation- Please suggest hotels/ homestays, Budget-Max 3.5K per night

3. Places to visit- we want the trip to not be very touristy. Want to see nature at its best. And any adventure activities if possible during the time.

4. Rain wont affect the trip right? Like will travelling be an issue?

Thanks in anticipation

Hi VeniVediAmavi,

Firstly, 9 days is spot on for a nice trip in Meghalaya. As for August, who will not love to experience the rains. But mind you not every day will it rain, nor every hour and definitely not everywhere.

As for your itinerary, this is what I would suggest:

12- Reach Guwahati. Proceed to Mawphlang. Enroute spend some time in Umiam lake and Shillong sightseeing. Halt at Mawphlang
13- Morning check out the sacred groves for 1 hour then Proceed to Mawlyngbna. Halt
14- Proceed to Mawphanlur. Halt
15- Proceed to Sohra. Sohra sightseeing. Halt
16- Proceed to Nongriat. Return to SOhra and proceed towards Mawlynnong. Halt at Dawki/Shnongpdeng
17- Shnongpdeng activities. Proceed to Amlarem for Krangsuri falls. Proceed to Jowai/Ialong. Halt
18- Sightseeing. Proceed to Shillong. Enroute visit Laitlum, Sweet falls & Ever Living Museum. Evenings hangut in Laitumkhrah area. Halt
19- Don Bosco Museum after breakfast. Leave Shillong by 12pm.

Questions:

1. mode of travel- Are local buses suitable? I've read somewhere that MTDC has bus services and sightseeing trips for shillong and Cherrapunji- are these good or is it better to explore on your own. How else to travel? Cabs?

Cabs are the best way to explore. Local buses/sumos are available but will limit your plans as you will be bound by their timings. MTDC buses do not go to all the places.

2. Accomodation- Please suggest hotels/ homestays, Budget-Max 3.5K per night

Mawphlang - MaplePine Farms
Mawlyngbna - Travellers Nest
Mawphanlur - Travellers Nest
Sohra - Kut Madan Resort
Shnongpdeng - Local homestays
Ialong - Travellers Nest
Shillong - Guesthouses in Lachumiere/Dhankheti/Laitumkhrah

3. Places to visit- we want the trip to not be very touristy. Want to see nature at its best. And any adventure activities if possible during the time.

The itinerary that I have prepared has scope for some adventure. However since some places are more popular than others, that touristy feeling will be there in places like Sohra and Mawlynnong.

4. Rain wont affect the trip right? Like will travelling be an issue?
No such issues. These hills are much much older than the Himalayas and hence more stable.

Thanks Karikor, this is very helpful. I will research on the places you've mentioned and ask you more questions later.

Further, we are also planning to visit the kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, can you suggest how to reach and the time it will take.

Also, if we book a cab for the whole tour what would be the approx. cost involved, we are 2 people. Please share contact details.

I would then suggest you visit Kamakhya the day you land itself.

As for costs of transport, I think a small maruti 800 taxi should be around 2000-2500 a day.

Its always better to have a dedicated cab, but at the same time not having one is more adventurous.
