Dear Friends

I have never been to Meghalaya/ Assam/ Kaziranga. I am planning a trip this Oct with my wife- we are from Bangalore- will spend 3 days in Kolkata and then planning to spend a week in Meghalaya + Kaziranga. We are keen on nature sights- flora, birds- spending some quiet time in nature.

I have read royzlife's nice post- Khublei Khasi Hills - Shillong Trip report, October 2010.

Here is the rough itinerary I am planning- please advise if this makes sense and make suggestions. Thanks in advance!

16-Oct Leave for Shillong
17-Oct Shillong Peak, Mawphlang
18-Oct Mawlynnong, Cherrapunjee
19-Oct Leave for Kaziranga- reach by evening
20-Oct Kaziranga
21-Oct Kaziranga
22-Oct Kaziranga
23-Oct Leave for Guwahati- reach Guwahati by evening
24-Oct Kamakhya temple- leave for Bangalore in the afternoon

Regards
Vishnu

Dear Vishnu

My Personal Advice :

1) You do not need so many days for Kaziranga
2) Fly from Kolkata straight to Shillong an then proceed straight to Cherrapunjee/Sohra
3) One Day/ One Night in Shillong is more than enough. You can come back to Shillong before leaving for Kaziranga
4) There is so much to see and do in Meghalaya, that i find your itenary too cramped up, however if you are just interested in day trips and 5 mins stop in each site seeing point, then maybe it will work. But you will totally stressed out by the end of it.

@ Vishnu_agni

Do you have any interests in Outdoor Activities like Trekking,Outdoor Camping, Caving, Water Sports etc? If you do, we can dedicate a few days on such activities. If not, I will just expand the number of places for you to visit.

Having spent my childhood in Shillong, I'd say one night is certainly not enough and 7 days is too long. You may fill up the blanks to suit your comfort. Shillong is more of a place for lazing around. The walks in the city are ok, but the way to Upper Shillong towards Cherrapunjee is great. You can spend some time in Barapani, around Wards Lake, Lady Hyderi Park, the Police Bazar, the Military Cantonment area towards Upper Shillong etc. Easily 3-5 days for lazing around and refreshing youself. Be with nature and with the pines. Other than that, if you expect to see great views of dont-know-what, you'll be in for some disappointment.

Shillong has great natural beauty, especially the flora and fauna. The flowers will be in full-bloom during the time you plan to go there. I intend to go to Shillong next summer, and shall stay in my ancestral house there in Laban

@ Shamik Nag...

Well 7 days is not just for sightseeing and definitely not just for Shillong and Cherrapunjee, like what you have in mind. And the One day/one night in Shillong was suggested considering his earlier proposed iterinary which was cramped up that it included Kaziranga. Well now two nights and one day will have to do for Shillong.

3 nights (4 days) perhaps, or may be 4 nights (5 days) if you are the sort who like to walk long stretches. The weather would be salubrious, and the flowering season would be on.........so you wouldn't be disappointed. Well, Shillong is where I spent my childhood......so even 10 days is too short for me, coz I'd like to visit my St. Edmund's school in Laitumukrah, have a full day to myself roaming around Police Bazar, another full day walking upto Upper Shillong where we stayed at the government accommodation there (my dad was a government servant), criss-cross the Military Cantonment area, visit the vegetable and fish-meat bazaar called Barabazar, Barapani and Ward's Lake, Hyderi Park.............well, its nostalgia for me. Dunno whats a tourist viewpoint on this. But since a visit to Shillong is quite tough and involves a lot of time and money, an extra day even for boring you is far far better than a day less. And bored you wouldn't be I guess, if you are the sort who appreciate the weather, who appreciate nature, who appreciate flowers and who appreciate small-town life. I guess Shillong would have changed now........we were there a long long time ago.

@ Shamik,

Hey you're and Edmundian, so am I. Well I have my reasons for 7 days and not 3-4 days, as I will be lining up a slew of activities for them that they might even wished they had extended their 7 days by a few days more. My plan for them is that they explore and do activities to the maximum. Not just lay eggs in Salubrious Shillong.

What we are talking of is not just Shillong and Cherrapunjee, but Mawlynnong, Jakrem, Mawphlang,Umiam, Mawsynram, Dawki, Amlarem, Thadlaskein, Larnai, Smit, Mawthadraishan, Nartiang, Nongkhnum, Laitkynsew,Ranikor, Laitlum etc.

Cheers,
My fellow SEC,

Karikor Kharkongor

Good to know that you are an Edmundian too. Remember, SEC ya St. Edmund's heroes in every field, SEC ya St.Edmund's heroes who never yield,Proudly fly your flags boys gold maroon and green, SEC ya St. Edmund's SEC. Which era do you belong to? I was there till Class 10 when Br. Gaffney was the princi. We had Br. Omen, Br. Pinto, Br. De Costa, Br. Naronha, Br.Alphonso.....Miss Francis. Uffff, the benders on our backs and the caning on our palms and knuckles by the hated George Middlecoat.....hmmm, they are so fresh in my memory. Br.Omen became the principal of St.Columbus New Delhi just at the time when I finished Class 10.
Its all nostalgia..............oh my St.Edmund's, when do I see you again lol.
