Since you have kids along with you let them relaxingly enjoy the place , rather than making them feel it's torture.

Rainbow falls may not have enough water, but still worth the trek.

This is a very good trip for your kids. Educational. Fossils, Caves, waterfalls, treks, watersports, root bridges, etc etc

Tickets done.. Yay. Have booked flights to Shillong itself, to save the hassles of the travel to Guwahati and give maximum time to the lovely state.

Keshav's trip report (how did i miss that) has given a new headache. Mawphanlur. Pics looked lovely but will have to see how, and if, we can include that as well (karikor had suggested it at the onset and i was foolish enough to ignore).

Need a few suggestions
1. Taxi and driver (we are 4 adults and two kids, so would need an SUV). Mr Modak has been mentioned on the forum, but mostly for smaller cars, so dont know if he would be the best guy
2. I am planning Maple pine farm and Cherra holiday resort (any other options, in case they are booked). Would need contact details for stays at Nongriat, dawki and Shillong

Thanks.

No hotel reservations done yet, so flexible in that regards.

Does either Mawphalnur/Mawlygbna have fishing option (Pictures by Bimal indicate that Mawphalnur has some possibility), or do we have to go to dawki for the same. There is so much to see and do in Cherrapunji/shillong and Mawphlang/Mawphalnur and Mawlygbna that i am planning to skip dawki and devote more time at these 4/5 locations. Also make it more pleasurable for kids to enjoy and also understand the stuff there. Plus this allows us to spend one night each at the lovely traveller's nest at these places. Advisable??

Mawlynnong is more like a touristy touch point and hopefully wont matter if we miss it.
Dawki offers something new, but we can get scuba and watersports near mumbai as well. Better do what is unique in Meghalaya

So plan would be to spend 1 night each in Mawlygbna, Mawphalnur, Nongriat, and 2/3 nights each in shillong and Sohra. That way the adults can also try the horizontal caving, while the kids enjoy some time amidst nature / or in the touristy caves.

Please see my posting " RASTA: part-2" today I have updated the contact details of various Travelers nest.

Mawlyngbna as well as Mawphanlur, both you can do fishing. But to tell you the truth, it's not the right season for fishing. Fishing in Mawlyngbna will cost you Rs500/- but it's free in Mawphanlur.

Shnonpdeng is a beautiful place. The idea of spending the day in the river bank among natural round stones....it has its own charm.

YUP, reading your trip report and awaiting more details. Entire Meghalaya seems like a lovely place and a place to enjoy at leisure. Only if i had 19 days like you, would have done all the places.

Most of our earlier family trips have been at leisure and we tend to enjoy the place and interact with local people, which gives us more insights in their lives. Plus have a 4 year old, who might get jittery along long drives. So, that's why trying to maximize fun and learning for the kiddos.

Fossils, rainforests, root-bridges, fishing/kayaking, limestone caves (older one has seen a couple in Europe, so good to compare), flora and fauna would be fun as well as a good learning experience for both of the kids

I am not an expert....I just traveled with family last month.

We have the same GURU....KARIKOR uncle.

My daughter (10 yrs) had no problem what so ever.
You can carry the 3 years old.
I am quite sure about the ladies, as Sandhya(wife) with her knee problem could do it and come back next day, then your entire team can.
But I am not sure about your 7 years old kid.

Karikor may suggest you better whether the elder kid can be carried by some porter there or not. I did not see any porter carrying people there. But there are porters who carry goods.I strongly believe, you will not need a porter. If I were you....JUST DO IT. There will be no issues.

With a guide It took 3hrs 20 minutes for us to reach Nongriat. We decided to leave Sandhya (wife) and Megha( Daughter) at serene guest house and went to Rainbow. Must be close to 2000 steps and it was much more difficult than the first 3000 steps. We did the right thing not to bring them along.....This is my story AND i am 92 kilos. so take your call. But I can tell you...RAINBOW FALLS is worth the pain.

Start early morning from Tyrna, give your self 3-4 hours to reach. The moment you reach Nongriat, without wasting any time push for Rainbow. (I suggest leave the family to enjoy the double Decker).Next day early morning start....you will be able to do it in 3 hours to Tyrna.

Yup, will go ahead without the porter initially and see if the kiddo is able to take it, if not, will enquire, if someone there is able to help us out the next day. With the kids you never know, if they are having fun they can just go through the entire trek without a noise, but god forbid, if not, it will be difficult to motivate them to even go up 2-3 floors...

As much as i am tempted to include Mawphalnur, i think it would be better to skip and concentrate on the other parts. So, unless the Guru Karikor has suggestions, will stick to:

17: Reach Shillong by 2:30, possibly by 3:30 start off towards Malyngbna. Stay at Traveller's nest.
18: walk around to fossils, enjoy the kayaks, fishing etc and stay there till lunch. Leave by 2 onwards to Jakrem hot springs. Spend some time there and then drive to Mawphlang. Stay at Maple pines.
19: Local cherrapunji sight seeing (elephant falls, Arwah caves, Mawsmai caves, Nohkalikai falls, Dian then falls). Stay at a local place (Cherra holiday resort / Sai Mika)
20: Trek down to Nongriat village for double decker and Rainbow falls). Stay there
21: trek up, reach Tyrna by lunch. Drive to Mawlynnong via the balancing rock. In the evening reach Shnonpdeng and stay
22: Enjoy boating, scuba, relax. Stay at Shnongpdeng
23: onwards to Shillong via tyrshi falls and Krang shuri falls. Also visit Laitlum on the way. Relax and shopping in Shillong
24: Local sight seeing in Shillong (ward's lake seems interesting, Laitlum also, rest would be happy for suggestions)
25: have an onward flight at 2:50, so leave shillong by 12 to have ample time. One option is to leave early, go to strawberry farm/umiam lake as both are near the airport.

Jakrem is not worth it. They have spoiled the natural beauty by creating cheap looking bathrooms.

Staying at Cherra Holiday Resort will make more sense if your doing the Nongriat trek next day. So what you do is finish off all the Sohra sightseeing , then in the evening come and take rest at CHR.

Also Laitlum will be best covered on 23rd, so that you do not have to return the same way again and will have more time within Shillong city.

Also on 25th, better to leave early. You can stop at Umiam lake water sports complex for boating but you need to be out of that place before 12. Sohliya farms will be too far from Shillong airport.

I guess rest looks A-ok.

I agree with the GURU. JAKREM is not worth during a tight schedule. Also same with Sohliya.

Elephant falls, I thought was a short detour from Mawphlang on the way to cherra.

Laitlum, Tyrshi and Khang Shuri - i know of. Any other points that we need to look out for. Shopping is, if time permits. Else, we also have 24th..

25th - will do umiam

What are the things to do in Shillong. We are perfectly ok to laze around and go around the town, or head to a park and let the kids have fun. Anyways, we have seen quite a few things in the last few days so may be just one day for the kids to have some fun and may be visit the Don Bosco museum, in case it interests them.

Also any hidden gems or off the tourist circuit must sees, that i am missing across the board. Mawphalnur apart...
