We are a couple and we will be travelling to Meghalaya in january for 5 nights and 6 days (7th to 12th Jan). We are not looking to cover the usual shillong-sohra-dawki/shnonpdeng circuit, rather would like to explore offbeat places. Also we'll be doing this on budget so will be travelling by public transport/shared vehicles.

Also we don't want to just cover a lot of places but would like to spend considerable time at each place so as to understand the people and culture there.

Day 1- delhi- Guwahati(8.30 am)- Shillong- Mawphanlur (halt)
Day 2- mawphanlur- nongkhnom island-mawphanlur (halt)

Is there a place to stay in nongkhnom?

Day 3- explore mawphanlur (halt at mawphanlur)

Should I stay at mawphanlur on day 3 or proceed to
mawphlang?

Day 4- Mawphanlur- Mawphlang (halt)

Shared jeeps are available between markasa and mawphlang?

Day 5- David Scott in morning then proceed to ?.

After David Scott, should I go to mawlyngot or
mawlyngbna or umden? Which place is easier to each using shared jeeps?

Day 6- Explore the place we ended up going on day 5. Return to guwahati in evening. Have a flight to Delhi at 9 pm.

Hello Smriti,

Mawphanlur is a lovely place, but, it seems you will be spending too much time there. This would have been good for maybe a place like Mawlyngbna.

You may even consider other places like Kongthong or Nonglang.

Also rather than depending on shared transport, why don't you think of hiring a scooty?

Now here are my pointers for your itinerary -

Day 1- delhi- Guwahati(8.30 am)- Shillong- Mawphanlur (halt)
Day 2- mawphanlur- nongkhnom island-mawphanlur (halt)

Is there a place to stay in nongkhnom?

There are travel agencies that arrange tent accommodation in Nongkhnum. Also a guest house is being constructed by the state government.

Day 3- explore mawphanlur (halt at mawphanlur)

Should I stay at mawphanlur on day 3 or proceed to
mawphlang?

Better to proceed to Mawphlang

Day 4- Mawphanlur- Mawphlang (halt)

Shared jeeps are available between markasa and mawphlang?

You should get shared jeeps till Lad Mawreng

You can cover both Sacred Grove and David Scott trail on this day

Day 5- David Scott in morning then proceed to ?.

David Scott will take 5 hours one way.

After David Scott, should I go to mawlyngot or
mawlyngbna or umden? Which place is easier to each using shared jeeps?

You will need 2 days to explore Mawlyngbna and nearby places. Umden is closer to Guwahati and warmer.

Day 6- Explore the place we ended up going on day 5. Return to guwahati in evening. Have a flight to Delhi at 9 pm.

Thanks for the advice, karikor.
We can hire a scooty of course.
Do you have any suggestions on from where we can get a scooty at a reasonable price?

There are 2-3 places that hire scootys for like 100 rupees for 2 hours or so.
But the number I have belongs to Miki - 7005250188 / 9077177021

Anyway it is better to finalize your itinerary first so that you can arrange accommodation.

Thanks for your pointers. You've been really helpful.
I've modified it a bit.
Day 1- Guwahati-shillong-Mawphanlur (halt)
Day 2- Mawphanlur- Nongkhnum island - mawphanlur
Halt either at mawphanlur or nongkhnum island

Day 3- proceed to mawphlang in morning
Planning to cover sacred groove. Halt at mawphlang

Day 4- David scott trek and proceed to mawlyngbna or umden
Now this is the day I can't figure out.
If I start the David Scott in morning form mawphlang to
ladmawphlang then how will I commute from
ladmawphlang to either mawlyngbna or umden?

Which place would be better to visit especially in
January, Mawlyngbna or umden?
Also if I hire a scooty then how will I be able to David
Scott? I can't figure this out.

Due to logistics reasons, I would skip David Scott Trek and spend more time in Mawlyngbna.

This is what I would suggest -

Day 1 - Guwahati - Shillong - Mawphanlur. Halt

Day 2 - Mawphanlur - Nongkhnum - Nonglang/Mawpdai. Halt

Day 3 -Nonglang/Mawpdai sightseeing - Mawlyngbna . Halt

Day 4 - Mawlyngbna and surrounding sightseeing. Halt

Day 5 - Proceed to Mawphlang Sacred Groves - Shillong - Proceed to Umden. Halt

Day 6 - Umden and surrounding sightseeing. Proceed to Guwahati airport after lunch.

Thanks for writing back. I just have to bug you with a few more questions.

1. Where to stay in nonglang/mawpdai?
2.How to commute between nongkhnum and nonglang? Also, how to commute between nonglang and mawlyngbna?
3. Between mawlyngbna and mawphlang, are there any shared transport available?

Or I'll have to hire a scooty for commuting between all these places?

1. Where to stay in nonglang/mawpdai?

There is a travellers nest at Nonglang and a guest house at Mawpdai. Nonglang may be preferred as it is in between Nongkhnum and Mawlyngbna.

2.How to commute between nongkhnum and nonglang? Also, how to commute between nonglang and mawlyngbna?

Hire a scooty from Shillong

3. Between mawlyngbna and mawphlang, are there any shared transport available?

Or I'll have to hire a scooty for commuting between all these places?

Scooty will solve all your problems and remove all hassels in between these places.

Thanks a ton. Sorry to bug you again. Just few more questions.

1. I can't find any information regarding nonglang online. Can you please tell something about the place? Also do you have contact of travellers nest nonglang.

2.What would be the terrain like for driving? We don't have the experience of driving in mountains before.

3.Can you give me some information about weather in January?

You can google for Tai Resort. I'm sure number will be available online

2.What would be the terrain like for driving? We don't have the experience of driving in mountains before.

SO long as you take it easy, no issues. Plus very less traffic. SO you can take it cool and calm and enjoy the views in between.

3.Can you give me some information about weather in January?

It will most probably be sunny between 7am and 3pm. So whatever driving you do, try to do in between this timing. After that temperature will drop significantly.

Thanks for all the help.
We have decided to hire Honda Activa 125. Will it be okay for Meghalaya roads?
Also, I read somewhere that only 4 wheelers can go from markasa to mawphanlur as the stretch is pretty bad. Is it true or the scooty will do just fine?

Last time I went, 6-7 months ago, black topping was being done from Markasa to Mawphanlur. I guess by now it should have been finished.
