How was Umngot river at Dawki in this monsoon? Could you see the famous crystal clear water or the rains have spoilt it?
Can you please suggest some good hotels at Shillong and Cherrapunji? I am planning a trip in August.
Also how long does it take to reach Guwahati airport from Cherrapunji?
Thanks in advance.

Hi ,

I stayed in Shillong for just 1 night with 3 other fellow travelers and we had tough time finding a decent stay near police bazar. They were either full or very expensive . We finally found 2 rooms in broadway hotel. Mediocre rooms with high rate but I guess that's how shillong is. Very expensive esp for budget travelers.

In cherapunji I first stayed at Lyngdoh Mawphlang which has a beautiful view of a waterfall in front . Again they charges 1k for a basic room with space only for a bed and no bathroom attached . Friendly host and great food is a plus.

I didn't travel directly from chera to shillong or back as we connected other places in between . So can't comment on that.

From Guwahati airport to main city(Palton Bazar) it will take a min of 45 Mins . Palton to Shillong say 3-3:30 hrs .

We didn't see crtsyal clear water at Dawki as we reached there bit late in the evening but the boating was really nice. I think the view would be better in october.

I would be traveling solo(or sometimes with a friend) for 2 weeks in December.

It seems that taxis are the only option to go places. Still, how to get a shared taxi or public transport?

I do not think if safety is an issue there, correct?

2 weeks is good and relaxed. Hiring a motorcycle will make more sense.

No safety issues at all. Only issues will be getting accommodation so late.

The plan is to reach Guwahati on 16 Dec, travel to places(Assam, Meghalaya) by going in a direction.

I want to end the trip with long stay at Mynteng/Nongriat (including new year).

Come back to Guwahati on the last day 2 Jan.

Is it needed to book a room in advance(everywhere or at touristy ones such as Guwahati, Kaziranga, Sohra, Shillon, Jowai, Cherrapunji, Nongriat)? I would have liked the flexibility in the plan.

You have already listed out 50% of the places which need prior bookings. So you better sort out accommodations first.

What all places are you planning to cover?

Hi Yogesh ,

From Guwahati you will easily find shared cabs to shillong. So no worries.
I went to Mawplang from shillong and then to cherapunji . As i could not find any share cab to mawplang i booked a cab of my own and obviously it was expensive . Actually it was a mistake to visit Mawplang first and instead i should have gone to cherapunji directly .There will be enough share cabs and even a bus to chera from shillong.
Thankfully for the remaining trip i found 3 travel mates and the rest of the cab expenses were shared.
So it was only cab till shillong which marked the end of meghalaya trip.

Shared cabs will be available to main places like Cherapunji from Shillong . Also a state transport bus .
Hiring a two wheeler is also a option.

First of all, any reason for staying in Umiam Lake? Also from Umiam why go to SHillong, when you can go directly to Jowai. Next, Mawphlang should be covered after SOhra and Nongriat.

Also why so many days in Nongriat?

Updated itinerary attached as image.

Umium or Shillong, any one should be fine.

At the end of the trip, want to rest at some picturesque village and thought Nongriat could be the option. Hence, longer stay. What are the other recommended places?

To put this place at the end of the trip, we placed Mawphlang before it after seeing it in the map. We thought to come back to Shillong from Mawphlang to return the bike. But that can be changed, if this would be difficult.

Want to rent bikes for most of the trip, except the days in Sohra/Nongriat where we would be staying/walking/climbing steps. Assuming that we need to go to Shillong to rent and to return it, we planned to be at Shillong again.

I again want to point out that it is better to cover Mawphlang after Sohra and Nongriat. After Mawphlang you can end your trip in Mawlyngbna or/and in Mawphanlur.

Except for Shillong, Sohra, Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng, all other places will fall under calm and quiet stay.

Also bike rent is the best way to travel in these hills.
