Hi,
I am an Indian guy who will be marrying an American girl coming May.
I want to know how will the marriage registration take place exactly.

In particular I would like to know is what are the forms submitted during the submission of intention of marriage?

The most important thing I would like to know is when the marriage certificate, is it mandatory for both of us to be present.

The situation is my wife to be will not be able to stay for 30 day period as she will be joining her residency program back in the US.

I would appreciate if some one details us about the exact procedure.

Thanks

A lot depends on where in India you are getting married.

We will be getting married in Pune. Date is 27th May 2013.
I will be the one who will be showing the residency status.
Should we give the intent notice before getting married or Get registered after getting married.
I get that the 30 day period is still to observed in both cases. My problem is that my wife may not stay in India beyond a week after marriage.
What should be done in this case?

Get unconfused before getting registered/married.

If you are marrying under the Special Marriage Act, the registration is the marriage. Whatever social or religious ceremony/celebration you do is irrelevant to the legal process. If you are getting married under, say The Hindu Marriage Act, then I don't think 30 days notice is required.

First Choose Your Marriage Act.

There's heaps of other threads here where you can benefit from the experience of others.

Let me simplify and clarify my stand.
Day 1: I get married. Day 2: I submit my papers at the registration office under special marriage act. Say after a week my wife leaves for the US.
Can I collect the certificate alone or do I still need my wife along with me to get it?

Or another situation.
Day 1: I submit intention of marriage. I get married say after 15 Days and further to that after 15 days I go to collect the certificate alone. Is it OK?

If this is till confusing. Please write in detail of each step that takes place during the registration under special marriage act.

PS: I have read the earlier posts.

To be short and precise, do we both need to be present all through the time taken (end of 30 days of notification) for the process.

Under SMA:
Day 1: Apply or submit intention of marriage. can be done by either or both parties.
Day 30 or after: Get married at the Registrar's office (Yes, that is the Marriage, any other function you have is irrelevant). You Get the Marriage Certificate(s) immediately or in a few days time. It HAS to be 30 days or later. Can't be reduced.

Under Any Other marriage law:
Day 1: Have whatever Religious Marriage you want to.
Any day after that: Apply for Registration of Marriage at the Registrar Office. Might take a week or more or less to get the Marriage Certificate.

That's it. I can't improve on narendra.d's summation, except for a point which is probably just pedantic.

But there is a maximum. Might be six months. Wording of SMA will state.
