From memory she has to live in India for five years before Indian citizenship can be applied for.

indian citizenship for an iranian spouse

I thought it was seven, but I haven't looked for a long time.

The application process begins with filling in an application online. I'll add the link when I get to the computer... But Google might provide it faster!

Added... Here you go, the link. Eligibility details are also there. Yes, it is seven years "ordinarily resident." But finding out all the details, and reading all the small print would be essential. Even this page says to read the Citizenship Act.

Registration As a Citizen of India Under Section 5(1)(c) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 Made by a person Who is/has been married to a Citizen of India (MHA)

(edit: Problem link corrected)

thank you so much
ordinarily resident means she can visit iran in those 7 years or does she have to stay in india exclusively without going out for a particular time

Sorry. I don't know what happened there. I've corrected it in the post. New Link

This link gives you access to the online application form, when you are ready, qualified, and wanting to use it.

Resident, ordinarily resident, etc, are legal speak. The have definitions, and those definitions probably vary in different countries (and possibly even for different purposes, eg tax, immigration, etc). I can't offer a definition, but my guesstimate would amount to something like: Usually lives there, spends all but short periods there, etc etc. Really, on this one, ask a lawyer! And I don't often say that!

By the time you qualify, if India has been your only home, I think you would count as ordinarily resident.

Hi ,
I know this is an old-ish thread but let me add : it takes 7 years to apply for an Indian passport which in that case you would have to surrender your original passport back to your countries embassy/mission meaning unless you are going to give up going back to your own country , you probably wont get a visa to your own country in which if you insist the embassy will ask you to apply for your Iranian passport again . anyhow in that 7 years you may apply for an OCI , that too after 2 years of marriage and not before that. another way would be marrying an indian man and staying in india applying for an entry visa(X-visa) in which you can extend every year and as the name suggests , its just an entry visa and you are not allowed to work , study etc.
hope it helps you or any one who is looking for such info.
