4 days a bit too much in my opinion. 2 days are good enough for a relaxed trip. Remember Matheran is the smallest hill station in India. In Monsoon, it get crowded specially on weekends, so avoid weekends if you can.

If you are planning to use the narrow gauge railway from Neral Junction you should check. In previous years the line has closed during the monsoon months.

There is a possibility that the narrow guage train would operate between Aman Lodge (Dasturi Naka) till Matheran. Usually people who take a cab / car get down at Dasturi Naka and then walk / take a horse / man pulled rickshaw to reach the market area (near the railway station).

Matheran is more beautiful in rains. Be prepared for heavy rains. If you love walking then even 4 days will be not enough. If you can then avoid weekends. It will get crowded.

As mentioned earlier Aman Lodge to Matheran services will run at regular intervals. Neral - Matheran service has already been suspended.

If you want to stay away from the market place MTDC @ Dasturi Naka is a decent budget option to stay.

Wear an used shoe / sandal. The red soil along with the rains if any will spoil your footwear.

Walk to the sunrise point. The route starts from the MTDC resort near Dasturi Naka. Similarly there are quite a few walks in Matheran leading to one point or the other.

@aarosh Thanks for the info. I am planning to go by toy train from Dasturi Naka till Matheran, only if I get tickets. But as far as I know, its hard getting toy train tickets. I am planning to visit all the popular points in 4 days by foot (if it doesn't rain during that time). I will make sure that I buy a shoe that can survive the rains and red soil

@shahronakm Do you have any idea about Horseland hotel and how far it is from Matheran market/railway station? MTDC hotel we have to pre-book. Tickets would be sold out if I go and try to book then. The problem is I do not stay in Maharashtra. MTDC hotels cannot be booked online. I dont want to spend much on accommodation.

I am also planning to travel by the toy train from Dasturi Naka. But As far as I know, getting tickets is not easy. Thanks for the info about shoes.

I am planning to visit all the popular points by foot if it doesn't rain heavily. MTDC is the cheapest option i think, but getting tickets is tough. Any idea about other good budget hotels? I am going alone.

Train services from Neral - Matheran would be shut off due to rains.
And it rains a "lot". Trains "May be" operational from Dasturi Naka to Matheran. If not, its just half hour walk till matheran station.
On weekdays, getting train tickets is a no big deal (if trains are running!)

Avoid weekends. Otherwise it a peaceful place. 2 days are enough.
If on weekdays, just walk in, no need of an advance hotel reservation.
I dont think even on weekends (in monsoon) there will be a hotel non-availability. There are lot of guest-houses. You'll be confronted by a tout at the station. you can take his service, or just ignore and hunt for an accommodation on your own.

Roadchef, MTDC hotels can be booked online. visit their website for more bookings. Their economy rooms are value for money. I have personally stayed there 2 years back when they were just renovated. Regarding Horseland I am not aware much except that it is 10 min walking distance from Matheran railway station.

As vic86m has suggested go there without bookings & you will find place to stay within your budget.
