Hello!
Had been to Tarkarli and Malvan in December.

Full trip report here;
Tarkarli Malvan 2012

The plan : The info on web was scarce, but fellow IMer's came to rescue.There is an outstanding travelogue by Sadanand Kamath (Sada Mama) on tarkarli & malvan which was our reference. Link here

Day 1 : Early morning Janashatabdi from dadar (departure 5:20am) Reached kudal at 12:30pm. Took a rickshaw to Kudal st stand and then a st express bus to malvan. A hour of relax and then proceeded to newly built ganesha temple. Up next was "Rock gardens" and then proceeded to chivala beach for sunset.

Day 2 : Early morning visit to Sindudurg fort. Returned at 11:00am, dumped the snorkelling plan. Went to tarkarli for backwaters boat ride to tsunami point, dolphin watching (, nivati bogawe beach (what a place it is!!!) Arrived late in evening, so had to postponed tarkarli beach to next day.

Day 3: Early morning at Tarkarli beach (was littered ) Left for mumbai at afternoon. Reached mumbai 11 PM.

Brief report;

Rock gardens - Is a makeshift garden. And as the name suggests, has natural sheets of rocks. Nice place to spend evening.

Chivala beach - Uncluttered. Crowdless, Clear sand, and that superb curve where there are palm trees and sun sets behind it! Spectacular!!!

Sindhudurg fort - A place to visit atleast once (And if your history buff like me, you visit it often!), Fort walls are crumbling. Immediate restoration needed (Explored the reason behind it in my blog) Nevertheless, it is always awesome to visit a place where your "icon" once dwelled.

Snorkeling : Got the description of it from a small shop in sindhudurg fort. Didn't find it attractive so dumped it. May be in future i'll opt for scuba diving.

Backwaters : There are series of "so called" points which the boatman shows you enroute. The points in sequence are as follows;
1) Houseboat - Fixed, unmovable, converted to a hotel (very expensive!) and is worth only a pic.
2) Tsunami point - A mass of sand that rose from sea bed during the 2004 tsunami. Hub of water sports. We ride speed scooter (yamaha wave runners!) & kayaking.
3) Dolphin watching - As per reviews, i was expecting a no-show because it was an afternoon. And i was right. The best bet is at dawn.
4) Nivati bogawe beach - The highlight of this trip! What a beach it is!! Unlittered, un-explored, you doubt for a minute that are in India? (especially when you are used to juhu and goan beaches! ). Hidden behind mammoth rocks which opens up at the last moment when your curiosity is at its maximum (the description given by boatman earlier was the reason why it multiplies!) but it lived to what was described!

Tarkarli beach : Was disappointing. with this one. Was littered. And when your expectation are high after visiting nivati bogwe, it seems it is incomparable. Nevertheless, the water was sparkling clear. You can see sand even when water was waist height. The sea seems to be pulling you inside probably due to strong currents.

More detailed description in my blog along with pics are below;

Vic86m.

Amazing detailed trip report giving the fair idea about how to visit the Tarkarli and which are the famous attractions to see. The moment i saw pictures of pristine beaches of tarkarli, i fell in love with its scenic beauty. Would love to visit this place may be next year as this year dates are already fixed for other locations.....

Hi,
Thank you for this wonderful post.
I'm planning a trip to konkan for 10-12 days and we prefer local transport. How was your experience with the transport?

Thanks

Local transport is hassle free. I got an impression that buses in konkan are punctual (just my observation). I've mentioned about it in my blog.
Glad that it helped you. 10-12 days seems to be long tour along the konkan coastline. What else do you intend to cover??

Trip report - Tarkarli Malvan

Hi there, i thank you very much for your account. I am planning to be there in february. Where did you sleep? The info about tarkarli beach worries me a bit. I wanted to stay there. I found a lot of accomodations available on the sand sleeve at the mouth of the river but i do not find them advisable given your account.

Ciao

Pigiamino

There are guesthouses/hotels opposite to Tarkarli beach i remember. We stayed at a lodge (Not a good one though, not recommended) opposite to Malvan ST depot.
You can opt to stay at Tarkarli, no issues about it.

Pigiamino, did you find anywhere to stay in Tarkarli? I'm heading there in a few days and am slightly worried about the price of accommodation...

No worries, you will find plenty of them (in your budget) in Malvan and Tarkarli. Those at Tarkarli are generally priced higher and are fewer because of the beach front. If you run out of options at Tarkarli, you can try accomodation at Malvan.
