Hi,

I am travelling in December to Ganpatipule and have heard the normal route via NH 17 is not safe. Can I get advice on alternate routes for reaching Ganpatipule?

I understand there are routes which one can take after crossing Pune which are better. Which would be the preferred route. I searched on the other forums and could not get an answer.

One of the passengers is pregnant and I want to avoid unsafe and bad roads. Therefore would appreciate if someone can let me know the current status of the preferred road (potholes, etc.) (I am trying for train travel but do not feel I will get confirmed tickets.)

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Zany.

Have you tried the new Double Decker train to Madgaon? Tickets might be available in them if you book them now.

People say NH17 is not safe since it is a 2 lane highway. Construction work is going on in patches to convert it to a 4 lane highway. Apart from that there are no other issues. Roads are in good condition.

For route via Pune read http://www.bcmtouring.com/forums/thr...d-route.55243/. However you can not avoid NH17 totally.

Thanks for the prompt reply Aarosh. Yes, I am trying for the Double Decker, but though its been inaugurated, the services have not been launched

One of my friends went via NH17 some time back and was saying its harrowing to drive on that road due to overtaking, etc.

Thanks for the link, I will check out the routes mentioned there.

Hope someone has recently been there and can advise on road conditions.

Hii Zany, I have many a times travelled to Mumbai Goa via all three routes, NH 4, NH 17 and the Konkan route.

None of the routes per se we found unsafe...just one thing you may take care of is that reach your destination before it is dark...if you dont reach in time, then you may stop by at the nearest commercial destination...many are there and all have their own beauty...

frankly we drove through the hills in the dark as well since we did not reach the intended destination...and it was a awesome experience of lonely drive in a starry night. We ended spotting a lot of wild creatures on road as well...

the link below has the three routes mapped. The konkan route is the most scenic, NH17 is also superb.

NH 4 is the route after Pune which you are talking of..though it is a faster route.. it not so scenic.

Cheers!

Also, NH17 and the Konkan route has more curves and bends but roads are great...NH4 has a straighter and wider road

Hi TKS,

Many thanks for the info and map!

While NH17 is the best route, a friend who recently took it mentioned its harrowing due to road-widening of the single-lane road. If anyone has recently gone by it, would appreciate from where does the road work stop - from Chiplun or before? Then we can turn in from NH4 earlier.

For NH4, any idea of where to take a turn from? Some suggest to take the

Pune- Satara-Karad-Right turn off NH4-State Highway; Join NH204-Amba-Sakharpa-Pali-Hathkhamba- Ratnagiri-Ganapatipule

The other suggestion is Pune- Satara-Umbraj-Kohna Nagar Dam-Chiplun-Ganapatipule.

Which would be better?

BTW, I managed to get double-decker train tickets, so pregnant relative is travelling with husband by train; and others by bus.

@zany guy

The road widening work is undertaken in the stretch from Panvel to Mangaon. There has been zero progress in the recent months though. Beyond Mangaon, the only thing you need to look after is the curves and the ghats.

The best route that I would prefer for Ganpatipuple is: Mumbai-Kalamboli-Pune Expressway-Khalapur Toll Plaza-Khopoli-Pali Road-Pali-Nagothane-NH17-Hathkhamba-Ratnagiri-Aare Waare-Ganpatipule. There are a few potholes on the Khopoli-Pali Road, but just enough not to be a nuisance.

- Kapil

EDIT: I'm not familiar with the condition of other routes that lead to Ratnagiri. I only know the Poladpur route.

Dear Kapil,

Many thanks for the advice. We were going to take the route you suggested, however, just last night we managed to book tickets on the holiday special reaching there at the same time!! So matter resolved for now.

Please do let me know if anyone knows of good car rental services in Ganpatipule.

Thanks,

Zany.

You can get a sumo or equivalent for hire from the lane next to the MTDC gate at Ganpatipule. The rates are fixed and printed on a common rate card.

Oh great! Thanks for the prompt response!

Any idea of KSB Tours? http://www.justdial.com/Ganpatipule/...FyIEhpcmU=#rvw

We will need a pickup from Station and thought if anyone knew of a good agency, will be better.

I'd used their sleeper bus service to Mumbai back in September. It was an old bus, but comfortable. No idea about car-hire.

Hello,

I would be travelling to Goa from Oct 1 to Oct 11 via Vadodara -> Killa Pardi -> Panvel -> Kashid -> Ganpatipule -> Canacona (South Goa). I will stop at Killa Pardi, Kashid and Ganpatipule for night stays. Please let me know if anybody has current road status info about Kashid -> Ganpatipule and Ganpatipule -> Goa roads. I will be travelling in Tata Zest with family.

I am especially concerned about Kashid to Ganpatipule and Ganpatipule to Goa stretch as many told me to not venture on these roads at all as it would be nightmare to drive on these roads after monsoon and roads would be full of potholes and craters.

If it is so, I need to take Pune -> Satara -> Belgaum -> Chorla Ghat route and I have to drop plan to visit Kashid and Ganpatipule. In that case, please let me know how much I can cover in a day and where I can stay for night if I start from Killa Pardi (near Valsad) early morning and what would be the actual journey time to reach Canacona.

Thanks in advance.
