Hi all,

I've been trying to find out a bit of info about the Matheran toy train. I understand that tickets can no longer be reserved on line, does this mean you have to get to Neral station to buy them? or could we get them at Mumbai CST?

Does anyone know what times the train runs, different sites are telling me different information....

Many thanks

The CR will run six services on the section daily. Seats in first- and second-class compartments can be booked through IRCTC website in advance, while for general coaches, tickets are available at the station on the first-come-first-serve basis.

No reservations are possible on Internet. Wonder why!

Toy train to Matheran to restart in March

Quote:
The toy train service to Matheran, which was sus pended in May this year after two derailments, is ex pected to resume in March. Twenty six coaches and three engines that ply on the Neral-Matheran route have already been fitted with air brakes, and upgradation of tracks between Aman Lodge and Matheran is already underway. “We hope to finish the repair and maintenance work on the Aman Lodge-Matheran section by February end,“ said a senior officer from the Central Railway.
The toy train service was suspended after the train derailed on May 1 and May 8 this year, and a committee was appointed to probe it. The trains were dependent on manual braking, and the train's six brake porters had to apply them in sync to halt the train. “The new air brakes are controlled by a switch, and much easier to deploy,“ said the senior official. The suspension of the services has severely impacted the tourism-dominated economy of Matheran.

“There are no technical problems between Aman Lodge and Matheran, because the gradients and curves on this stretch are not critical,“ said Subhodh Jain, former general manager of Central Railway.

One can not book the tickets online.

The booking counter at Neral for the train opens around an hour before the scheduled departure. There is no separate queue for Ist class and IInd class. You are issued a card ticket instead of the regular paper ticket. This information is 3 years old.

With New Crash Barriers, the Iconic 110-Year-Old Matheran Toy Train Resumes Service/

Quote:
But starting today, the train will leave Neral at 6.40 am daily and arrive at Matheran at 9.40 am. And for its return journey, the train will leave Matheran at 3.30 pm and arrive Neral at 6.30 pm everyday.

For all those travelling on the toy train, tickets are issued from the station counter, 45 minutes prior to the departure of the train. While each passenger can carry only 5 kg luggage in second class, first-class passengers can carry 7.5 kg luggage with them.

Only a maximum of four tickets are issued to each person at the station counter. While the second-class tickets for adults cost Rs 45, for children it costs Rs 30. An adult ticket in the first class coach costs Rs 300 and a children’s ticket costs Rs 180.

Trivia

The Railway was first built by Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy and was financed by his father, Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy at a cost of Rs 16 lakh (US$25,000). The idea to build a railway line came to the young man because he visited Matheran often and wanted to build a railway to make it accessible for more and more people.

While his plans to construct the Matheran Hill Railway started in 1900, the construction started in 1904. The consulting engineer for the project was Everard Calthrop of the famous Barsi Light Railway. The railway line was open to traffic by 1907.
EDIT : Fares are Rs 75 and Rs 45 (child) for 2nd class I think.

The "new" toy train at Neral station ready to leave at 6.30am.

Left at around 6.40am reached Matheran at 9.40am. Really enjoyed the ride - paisa vasool for Rs 75. Only around 18 passengers from Neral today. All of us got into the same compartment D1. I shifted to the next one later - had it to myself from Jumma Pati to Aman Lodge. Some more pics tomo.

I guess such an early start would mean staying overnight in Neral, are there any good hotels there, or are there some later trains departing too?

We left Mumbai by early train in 2009, and departed Neral to Matheran sometime around 10am if I remember correctly...

Ed.
