Hello IMers,

In the beginning of Feb 2010 we are planning to do tour from Bengaluru to Maharashtra's major religious and scenic places.

Right now we have heard of Shirdi, Solapur, Pandarapur, Mahabaleshwar & etc., Apart from the above we do have plans make a visit to Ganagapur (propabably it may come bordering Karnataka-please correct me if I am wrong!)

We have plans to do 5-6 days journey on self driven car with day time travel restrictions.

I would request expert IMers to please draw an iternary & guide us the route map & places can cover while touring!

More and more inputs I would appreciate from IMers

Thanks in advance!

Jay

Hi Jayanna,

What coincidence !! We ( me, wife, two kids ) did a similar trip in Dec 2008 - starting from Bangalore, we drove to Kolhapur - Panchgani - Mahabaleshwar - Pratapgarh fort - Mumbai - Nashik - Shirdi - Shani shingnapur - Pandharpur - Bijapur - Ganagapur ( its in Gulbarga dist !) - Mantralaya and back to Bangalore. The trip odo read 3150 kms and took 8 days ( driving from 5 am to 2 pm )

Please let me know if this suits you - would share my iternary with you !

This year in October we drove to Mumbai (sea link bridge ) - Nashik ( tryambakeshwar ) - Shirdi - Shani shingnapur - Pune - Mahabaleshwar - Ganapatipule - Goa ( drove thru ) - karwar - jog falls - Bangalore ( clocked 3000 kms in 7 days )

The trip in 2008 was more of temples ( apart from Mahabaleshwar )
and had satisfying darshan at all places.

Early feb would also be right time to visit these places - though a little dry !

rgds,
Rao

Hi Ashok,

Itz very nice of you for your kind response!

Yes, I am very much interested to have the iternary from your side. It will be of great help, sure.

The thing is in one shot I would like to cover Maharashtra's major places as far as possible i.e, 'good ones'. As I am taking aged parents we prefer religious places, to be precise. Ofcourse we would like to have scenic places also provided it doesn't take much deviations.

Kindly indicate the places' significance for eg., Panchgani we have never heard of (sorry for my ignorance), Pratapgarh fort etc.,

Though my initial thought was just to have 5-6 days trip, now we are ready to stretch further by 1-2 days coz opportunities will never knock again and again you know!

Kindly expedite your detailed iternary with possible advice on breaks (staying details). I am an average driver and intended to drive the Santro from dawn to dusk only.

Thanks in advance, for all the information!

Hi Jayanna,

It would be difficult to cover all major religious places in Maharashtra with some places of sight seeing in 8 to 10 days.

I could recall some major ones - 3 Jyotirlingas - Bhimashankar ( off pune ), Girineshwar( near ellora ), Triambakeshwar ( near nashik ), Kolhapur, Asta vinayak circuit ( near pune ), Ganapatipule, Shirdi, Shani shingnapur, Pandharpur, Tuljhapur Bhavani temple... and of course, Siddi vinayak temple in mumbai..

I would suggest a round about covering some of these temples coupled with resort type stay in some places of sight seeing.

Day 1 - Bangalore - Kolhapur ( 620 kms )
Day 2 - Kolhapur - Ganapatipule ( 160 kms )
Day 3 - Ganapatipule - Chiplun - Mahabaleshwar ( 220 kms )
Day 5 - Mahabaleshwar - pune - Nashik ( approx 350 kms )
Day 6 - Nashik - Shani shingnapur - Shirdi ( approx 150 kms )
Day 7 - Shirdi - Pandharpur ( 280 kms )
Day 8 - Pandharpur - Sholapur - Akkalkot - Ganagapur ( via afzalpur ) ( 200 kms )
Day 9 - Ganagapur - Bangalore via Gulbarga, Shahapur, lingsugur, mudgal, ilkal and hospet ( 680 kms - good roads assured except hospet - chitradurga - 140 kms ). other shorter routes are bad.

This way you could cover some major temples, a beach resort, a hill station and not the least - good roads throughout. A non stop drive on the first and last day is non avoidable. On other days, an early morning four or five hour drive would be sufficient and rest of the day would be for sight seeing / darshan.

Please let me know if this suits you. I would forward addresses and phones numbers of good/decent hotels / resorts at these places.

Regards,
Rao

Hi RaoAshoka

Thanks for your response.

As you said it may be little difficult to cover major places of Maharashtra in one go. I am just trying to understand the circuit mentioned by you & also parallely googling some information, to have better understanding!

Whether I can break the journey on first day instead straight from BLR to KOL, If so which city is best to take a break please let me know. Since Pune is coming in the circuit for Vinayak temple shall I look at Mumbai also to have a look Gateway of India and other places, kindly let me know.

You are also requested to send the contact & accmmodation details as early as possible in order to do bookings for the same.

Thanks once again!

Jay

You could take a break in either Hubli or Dharwad (around 400 km from blore). They are fairly big twin cites and should have some nice hotels. Not noted for tourism as though. The only thing you could probably enjoy is the famous Dharwar Pedha! The temple in Kolhapur is really famous, but also try to take a side trip to visit Panhalgad fort if time permits. It was a long time ago but I remember it being really nice

Lonar lake is about 120 km from Aurangabad. I am not too familiar with MH roads. Maybe someone else will advise you about it.

Hi Jayanna,

Ajanta, Ellora, Aurangabad ( Daulatabad fort, mini taj ) and Lonar forms a cluster and can be viewed from Aurangabad as base...in turn the closest place from the circuit mentioned is Shirdi / Ahmednagar... nothing religious and involves lot of walking / trekking .. not preferred by elders.

Asta vinayak temple circuit ( 8 vinayak temples ) can be visited keeping Pune as base and takes 2 to 3 days by itself.

Prefer visiting Mumbai only on a sunday....on other days, entering and leaving the city itself can take a day !

Bangalore to Kolhapur ( approx 620 kms ) can easily be done in 9 to 10 hours with average 60kmph speed ( we've done it in a Maruti 800 !)- the roads are very good ( except Davangere to Haveri stretch - bad patches ). Prefer a dawn start and you can be at Kolhapur by 3.30 or 4 pm ( with food breaks at Davangere and Belgaum ). If you would still prefer a break, start from Bangalore by 2pm and rest at Davangere ( 4 - 5 hours drive ) to start early next day and reach Kolhapur just after noon.

Ganapatipule ( though a bit remote ) is a big welcome change for people looking for mixing pilgrimage with pleasure. MTDC has an excellent resort very close to the temple - worth a try... you'll enjoy.

Driving on NH 17 from Hathkamba ( near Ganapatipule ) to Poladpur ( 40 kms from Mahabaleshwar ) and the ghat section from Poladpur to Mahabaleshwwar is a drivers delight - two laned road - reminds of good old highways.

Mahabaleshwar needs no introduction - British style hill station with vantage 'points' over deep valleys is refreshing..along with a stroll in the evening on market road... not to forget strawberrys and MAPRO garden at Panchgani ( 8 kms from Mahabaleshwar ) on way to Pune.

Elders would enjoy visiting Triambakeshwar, Panchvati and Tapovan ( all at Nashik ). Hire an auto for Rs.150 ( driver acts as a guide ) at nashik - he ensures you cover all the important places in 2 - 3 hours.

One can have quick darshans at Shirdi, Shani shingnapur and pandharpur in early Feb. You could drive back to Bangalore from pandharpur via zalki, bijapur and hospet. Ganagapur can be coupled with a visit to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole some time later. if not, drive to ganagapur from Pandharpur via sholapur and akkalkot.

MTDC has well maintained cottages in Ganapatipule, Mahabaleshwar and Shirdi. Please contact MTDC agent in Bangalore Prof. Ulhas Rane on 080 23417283 / 09448149236 or ulhasrane@gmail.com to get the bookings done. Will forward contact details of hotels at other places tommorrow.

Hope this helps... pardon me for a long account

regards,
Ashoka Rao

Hi RaoAshok,

You have to pardon me infact for taking your time!

Your earlier response was the right one infact in elder's point of view. I will skip Ajanta & Ellora, Lonar lake. Since Astavinayak circuit also taking a bit time we are planning to avoid even that. So we have zeroed down the places as follows:

1) Nashik - temples ; in and around
2) Kolhapur - Laxmi temple
3) Shirdi & Shani Signapur
4) Pandarapur
5) Mahabaleshwar
6) Ganapatipule
7) Ganagapur
8) Mumbai & Pune - optional
9) Panchagni

Above places are not in order! Kindly co-operate. If any important places comes in this circuit also let me know!

By considering the above places if u can kindly tell how to start, move via and where to halt and proceed it would be very helpful.

By the by while passing thru North Karnataka can I look at Alamatti Dam & Kudala Sangama - please do let me know.

I am sorry once again for bothering you...

Best Regards,
Jay

============================== =====================

Just now I googled information about Astavinayak temples which is around Pune and there will buses ply from pune to pune covering them.

If we decide to visit Astavinayak temple which is the better option ? - travel by our own vehicle or going by buses stationed at Pune.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Hi, apologies for not responding y'day - clients crying on year end targets !!

hmmmm.....almatti and kudala sangama ? I suggest you have another trip some time later covering these with Badami, pattadakal, Aihole, Ganagapur and Pandharpur. That would be a 4 or 5 day tour from Bangalore - can also include Hampi if tour for 6 days

Mumbai too can be skipped - takes too much of your valuable time.

That leaves us with the circuit - Kolhapur, Ganapatipule, Mahabaleshwar, Pune, Nashik, Shirdi and Shani shingnapur.

Option 1 - in the order of halting places - Pune ( 2 days for astavinayak ), Shirdi via Shani shingnapur, Nashik, Mahabaleshwar ( via Pune, kambatki and wai ), Ganapatipule ( via poladpur, chiplun ) and Kolhapur.

Option 2 - Kolhapur, Ganapatipule, Mahabaleshwar, Pune ( 2 days ), Nashik, Shirdi, Bangalore via Shanishingnapur visit, byepass pune and halt at any place enroute.

can include pandharpur after shirdi and join at satara for return to Bangalore ( Route - Shanishingnapur to ahmednagar to Temburni ( excellent single road ) to Pandharpur ( halt ) to Satara via Mhaswad and pingali ( 130 kms slightly lonely but SAFE )

I have no idea of package tour of astavinayak temples from pune - if there is a bus operator, it may be convenient - park your car at pune

Places of stay :
Kolhapur - no idea - not stayed so far. Good veg south indian food at Hotel Gokul ( beside rly stn )
Pune - Hotel Nataraj, swargate ( crowded but good VFM )020 24447586
Shirdi - MTDC, Saideep vilas ( beside MTDC )02423 255293,294, Sai sahavas 02423 256362 to 366
Nashik - Panchavati elite inn 0253 2579031, Tapovan resort 0253 2583970, Pooja international 0253 2505625
Mahabaleshwar - MTDC ( bit remote ), good economy hotels near the market road - but check for parking space.
Ganapatipule - one and only MTDC !
Pandharpur - Sri Gajanan Maharaj ashram ( walk in )
Satara - mahendra executive ( on NH 4 byepass )02162 245100, Radhika Palace 02162 231725 - good

If visiting Mumbai - Hotel Pearl, Chembur 022 25284025/26 - good rooms for Rs.1300 - hard to find

Please contact MTDC agent in Bangalore for reservations in MTDC hotels.

Hope this helps... welcome to discuss any further..

regards,
Ashoka Rao
