Aurangabad trip (Ajanta, Ellora, Shirdi): Please help with Hotel and itinerary.

I am reaching Shirdi thursday 10 AM and will be going to Aurangabad from there. I have a return reservation from Aurangabad mid-night sunday. Please advise on the following:

- A clean hotel in Aurangabad that is close to the city: my budget is Rs.2000 to 3000 per night.

- Any itinerary recommendations: my current plan is to visit Shirdhi, Ellora, Daulatabad, Ajanta and Aurangabad city. Would like to go to Lonar too - but not sure if I can do that in the limited time frame.

Any recommendations on the above would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I assume that you have return tickets from Aurangabad. You can start on Friday with local sightseeing at Aurangabad and proceed towards Daulatabad and Ellora. If you plan to hire a private vehicle, you can proceed towards Ajanta or stay back at Ellora. Ellora has a good option to spend the night, Hotel Kailas. It is a bit expensive costing around 2000 Rs. You may ask for cheaper rooms because I read somewhere in the forum that they have cheaper accommodation as well but you need to insist on it. At Ajanta, there are plenty of alternatives for stay. We stayed at Hotel Panigrahi which is a descent and budget Hotel with rooms costing around 600-700 Rs. Otherwise, you may go for MTDC resort.

On Saturday, you can cover Ajanta caves and proceed to Lonar for night stay. At Lonar, you can find accommodation at MTDC as well as there are a few more alternatives. We had stayed at MTDC and they have good facility along with descent restaurant.
Sunday, you can spend a few hours exploring the beauty of Lonar crater and return back to Aurangabad.

Try to dedicate one full day each for Ajanta and Ellora caves. Otherwise you will not do justice to them. Club Aurangabad city tour (Aurangabad caves and Bibi ka Maqbara) and Daulatabad into another day. You can well visit Ellora and come back to Aurangabad in the evening. Hotel Kailash is the only lodging option there. Tariff is ~2500. Not sure if they have cheaper rooms. At Ajanta MTDC is a good option. There are two hotels, one just beside the caves at Ajanta T-Junction and another 1 Km away. Tariff is ~1000.
Here is my experience

Agreed. It is tiring to walk about both of the sites and you need to give yourself time to rest so you can enjoy it.

I cannot remember the name of my hotel in Aurangabad, but I remember being quite fond of the town. Not sure why tbh, but I did meet a very friendly rickshaw wala and ate a lot of very tasty poha so I guess it all adds up to make the memory happy!

Fully agreed. I am just back from my trip to Aurangabad and a full day at each of these places is very much required if you want to enjoy and avoid too much hecticness in a single day.

We stayed at Hotel Panchavati which is a very decent hotel - 2 km away rom the central bus stand , Aurangabad. Room charges 900/ per AC room which was clean and clear. They run a restaurant and a travel services which are equally pleasant.

This hotel and the travel services (Ashoka Travels) are written up in lonely planet with some very positive response - and in my opinion they are really worth it!

I will post my travelogue soon.

Cannot recommend any good hotel in Aurangabad but certainly can suggest to keep away from Hotel Gymkhana Club. It cost us ~2400 and it was surely not worth it.
Dil_Se, we met one funny autorickshaw-wala in Aurangabad. He kept singing to Hindi tunes in is coarse voice and dedicated a song each to each of the girls on the road :) At times he took detours to follow a certain girl. We were terrified that we might be beaten up by the public due to his histrionics :(

Nope.

We did -

Ellora and Grishneshwar Temple - Day 1
Ajanta - Day 2
Daulatabad, Bibi Ka Makbara and Aurangabad Caves - Day 3

I have a plan to do Lonar and Pitalkhora Caves in near future though :)

PS: Your tips were really much helpful for us. So a huge THANKS to you.

Saugata,

I'll be staying at the same hotel later this month. I have a few questions for you:

1. I would like to go to Ajanta on the first day after I check into the hotel. How can I get there? Is there a bus that would take me there?
2. I'm only staying 1 night at Hotel Panchavati but I'd like to go to Ellora on the 2nd day (which I'm supposed to check out of the hotel) and I don't want to carry my luggage with me. Do you know if there's a place for me to store my luggage - either at the hotel or somewhere else?

Thanks

@aki096, Ajanta is quite far from Aurangabad.
You will have to reach Aurangabad bus stand and will have to ask for bus going via Ajanta. The buses take around two hours from Aurangabad reaching there.
The driver of the bus would be dropping you outside of the village. From there you would be taking local conveyance to the cave.
Further, you may leave your luggage under hotel's custody, which you may collect once you are back from the site seeing. They will oblige you happily.

Note also both Ajanta and Ellora close one day a week, each on different days. Try and check on this, I reckon ASI (Archaeological Survey of India, who maintain many if not most of these monuments) should be up-to-date on it, and I think they've been the same days for long: http://asi.nic.in/ .

I think it's Mondays and Tuesdays, respectively, but I forget which for which (I think that's for Ajanta and Ellora, in that order, but I can't be sure. Do double-check.) They should otherwise and like most monuments be open roughly from dawn till dusk.

btw If that Fardapur-Ajanta thing sounds like a hassle, it isn't. Fardapur is just where the public buses stop, there are shuttles as well as regular local buses between here and Ajanta, it's not far. (Though leaving Ajanta as late as I could, those shuttle buses appeared to have stopped, and catching a local bus turned out confusing. Never to fret, I just hopped on an autorickshaw for again the short ride, who duly saw me to my onwards bus.)

There's a bit of a touristy market thing where you enter Ajanta, this seems to have a reputation for its touting going on, though I had no hassle here. If you do, I guess just ignore it and walk on. It's not unhandy for a bite and a drink on the way out.
