Hi IMers,

Is it a good idea to go to Aurangabad for a 2/3 day trip in the monsoons? Only know about Ajanta-Ellora. Is there anything else to explore? Is public transport reliable to go to the tourist spots or I'll have to exclusively hire a cab for the whole duration?

Also, would love recos about food and stay too.

TIA!
Gaurav

Hello Gaurav,

There are many places to visit in Aurangabad.
Bibi-ka-maqbara, Ajantha, Ellora, Daulatabad, Ghrishneshwar etc.
Lonar crater is a day excursion from aurangabad.

Local transport (Black and yellow jeeps, ST buses are available to and fro), however if you want to cover more in less time cab is good option.

It doesnt rain much in that part of the world. But when it does, it rains cats and dogs. I have been there twice, both times in monsoon. Luckily there was no rain on the days i was there.

Go to Lonar before it disappears and becomes a housing development. Unfortunately, my bro in law had the opposite occur. I never, ever bring that up.
Daulatabad, you see by train in the distance. If you don't make time for that each train ride past it will haunt you as it has me.
Three days at least..

We had a weekend in Aurangabad last year. Could only cover Lonar, Daulatabad and half of Ellora. Stayed with a friend, so accommodation n food were sorted.

Btw, expect Ghrishneshwar and Ellora to be crowded once the month of Shravan starts. My blog on Lonar and Daulatabad is in the signature.

Great piece of information in your blog about Lonar.
On my mind. Planning for a day's visit.
This devgiri express is always fully reserved. So thinking of Janshatabdi express (reaches jalna at 9:30 pm), stay at jalna station (any decent hotels or guest houses in budget?) and next day morning bus to Lonar. Evening train to mumbai.

Someone tells me that Dr. Jamkhedkar also accompanies groups as part of a trip package. Google wasn't much of help, only links to his books. Can someone shed more light?

@vic86m - thanks .

There are a few hotels near the ST depot at Jalna - that's 10rs share rickshaw ride from the station.

There are a lot more options at Aurangabad though (larger city), and the morning bus to Lonar originates from Aurangabad. There's also a Shivneri service for Dadar-Aurangabad (not sure of the timings).
