I'm going to be visiting Aurangabad in early December (9th and 10th)and have some questions:

I'm arriving from Mumbai at 4AM by train.

I'm planning to take a tour that includes Ellora and sights around Aurangabad that day. Is it possible to just show up for the tour, or do I need to book in advance? What time do the tours start?

The next day, I was planning on seeing Ajanta, and then have to get a train to Bhopal at 1915 from Jalgaon. What can I expect to pay for a car for the day to go to Ajanta, wait while I tour the site, and then drop me at Jalgaon? I'm travelling alone and prefer not to spend too much. Is it possible to take a tour to Ajanta, and then not return with the tour and get transportation from Ajanta to Jalgaon? Don't really want to go by bus though if it is uncomfortable. I will have 1 medium size suitcase with me.

Is there anything interesting to see around Aurangabad in the early morning?

Any suggestions for hotels around 900-1000 INR for a single with 24 hour checkout? I would like to check in around 7 or 8 AM since I will be checking out early the next morning.

Thanks for the help.

You don't need to book for the tour. You can just go and join.

Ajanta is sort of remote. Hardly any buses. The chances are finding a cab are too slim to bank on. From what i see, your only option is to hire a cab to Ajanta and tell him to drop you at Jalgaon.

My 2 cents - Don't take the tour even on the first day. The guides rush you through the sites and they also take other tourists who have arrived there and hence you are constantly fighting for space with at least 50 (80 in weekends) people around. The guides will rush you at the caves like police with laathi and stop for 45 mins at desolate dhabas on the highway (to secure their share of commission from the dhabas).

For Ellora, Daulatabad and Bibi ka maqbara (agenda for the first day tour), i hired an auto rickshaw that charged 450 bucks. I found guide books better than guides of Aurangabad.

Welcome to Historic City Aurangabad

Welcome to Aurangabad
It depends all on your interests. If you are realy intersted in Rock cut Architecture then you will require one full day to ellora or if you just want to go through places around aurangabad including ellora ,daulatabad fort, Bibi-ka-Makbara (Mini Taj Mahal) you can join MTDC Bus tour which will take you to all places with reasonable time to see the places and will drop you back in the evening. In the evening you move around in the city.
Next day you can go by same MTDC bus to Ajanta and you can get seperate bus from ajanta to Jalgaon in the afternoon this will be very cheaper for you.or else you can take a taxi visit ajanta and ask him to drop you at jalgaon which i think the cost will be around Rs 2000.
I think this information is sufficient for you to take decision.if you still need any specific information feel free to ask.
Happy Journey

Thanks for the responses.

I'm in Aurangabad now. I think I will take the suggestion to take the tour to Ajanta and then a MSTDC bus to Jalgaon from there on Wednesday.

I checked with the guy at the travel agency and he said 2700 for a car to Ajanta and then to Jalgaon. That seems really high to me though. He also suggested the tour and then bus.

How often are buses from Ajanta to Jalgaon? How long should the bus ride take? Are all the buses on that route the same, or are some better than others?

I guess taking the bus also means I can spend extra time at Ajanta since I don't have to return with the tour group as long as I can get the bus right from Ajanta.

Last year at October we hired a car from Mohit Travels (09890640772) of Aurangabad for Ajanta visit at very economical rates , I think you can ask him to drop you at Jalgaon after you see Ajanta caves....
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

We visited Ajanta by bus as a day trip from Jalgaon. The ride is about an hour.

For to trip to Ajanta we went to the bus station and asked the driver to stop at the caves, of course he did.

For the return we went to the road and within a few minutes a bus arrived, we waved and it stopped. But he did not go to Jalgaon, the next bus, just a few minutes later was a hit.

The bus was not very crowded, we both had a seat.
