Hi All,

I'm travelling to Amboli this weekend and need some help. I was in Malvan back in April and i got some great suggestions by people in this forum. So hoping for something similar.
9 Sep- Mangalore to Madgaon by train by Kochuveli - Indore express. Will be in Madgaon by 4:05 AM as per the scehdule. I know this train passes Sawantwadi. But irctc tells me that the train does not stop there. So i decided to get off at Madgaon.

From Madgaon, i Plan to board a train to Sawantwadi road. I saw that there's a passenger train at 6:15. I'm thinking this could be the best option for us.

Q1) Can anyone confirm if this train exists and is on time (Normally)?

We're just 3 of us. So we want to take a rickshaw to Amboli from Sawantwadi.

Q2) Will the rickshaw driver be OK to take us to Amboli? How much do you think he'll charge us? Or is it best to get a cab? What will be the charge for the cab?

We're staying at silver spring resort. Going by the reviews on tripadvisor and Makemytrip, the place is pretty decent and is centrally located.

Q3) Has anyone here stayed at Silver Spring resort, Amboli? Can you share your experience?

In Amboli, we will rent a rickshaw and have him show us whatever he can in the entire day plus half of second day. We're not really sure about the things we must cover. The falls and the fort are the must cover place for us. But i think we should be able to cover pretty much everything in Amboli in the time we have.

10 Sept: Return to Mangalore.
Q4) We have a train from Madgaon to Mangalore at 8:40 PM. So what would be the best itinerary to reach Magaon from Amboli by 8:00 PM? We prefer trains and less road travel.

The passenger train runs daily. There could be a delay if 15 to 30 minutes. Go to Sawantwadi bus stop and ask for a bus going via Amboli to Kolhapur / Tuljapur. By bus it takes around an hour to reach Amboli.

From Amboli come to Sawantwadi and take a bus to Panjim.

There are 3 of you - can you three ride a gearless scooter (activa)? If yes, then I would suggest to rent one at Sawantwadi and use it for the entire trip. The rent is about Rs. 200 per day + fuel. A rickshaw would cost more, and I'm not entirely sure if it would be able to handle the ascent from Sawantwadi to Amboli. At Amboli you can rent a guide to show you the Jungle at night - other than that all points are easily marked and accessible. Kavlesad point is a must.

From Amboli there are a few buses that go directly to Panjim too. Not sure of the timing though. You can also break the journey at Sawantwadi as Aarosh suggested. Trains to Madgaon would be unreliable due to the monsoon timetable.

-x-x-x

Edit: The weather at Amboli would be wet and cold - perfect for sipping hot chai at the numerous tea stalls and the bhajjees and the corn n omlette-pav ... have fun!

Thanks a lot for your inputs. I just completed this trip and it was awesome.

We decided to bet on our luck and continued in the Kochiveli - Indore train with a hope that the train stops at Sawantwadi for crossing and voila, The train stopped for a few seconds in Sawantwadi. Easily saved us 1-2 hours.

From sawantwadi to Amboli, we rented a car. He charged us 1.2k. Since it was 4 of us, we were OK with that. The car dropped us to our hotel Silver spring resort. The resort was very good for the price we paid. 1,200 for AC room although we never had to use the AC.

The weather wasn't really wet. It was gloomy for most of the day and we were surrounded by greenery almost every where. We rented a cab that took us to Nangarta falls, HiranyaKeshi temple, Amboli waterfalls, Ganapahi temple and Kavlesad point. All of them were amazing and serene. Although we wanted to go to Mahadev Gadh point/fort, we did not have enough time to cover that. We had lunch at Narvekar mess in Amboli market area and it was the best food we had in the trip. We were back in the room before sunset and had some alcohol while watching EPL on a 14 inch TV.

Next morning we woke up late, Checked out and walked to the bus stop. Boarded the bus to Sawantwadi. Had lunch there. Visited Moti talao and Sawantwadi Palace(which was closed for renovation). Got a Auto to Sawantwadi road and waited a couple of hours before boarding the LTT - MAO double decker. And finally Mangala Lakshadweep express to Mangalore.

It was an amazing trip and every trip i have to Maharashtra makes me want to go back for more (The food and solkhadi ). I'm planning a trip to Ratnagiri/Ganapatipule. Would you be able to help me out with this?

Is Narvekar mess the same place that also sells honey? That place is also run by a Narvekar family, but I'm not too sure of the name - Balkrishna or Narvekar.

About Ratnagiri - yes! check out my signature. vaibhavarora also has a good, though as yet unfinished TR on the region.
