Hi

Does anyone know how to book jeep safaris etc in Corbett National Park? Is there a limit to numbers as in Ranthambhor Park? I will be staying in Binsar which is about 4 hours drive away so would not get there until the afternoon.

Has anyone actually seen a tiger there?

Dear Wendy

It is always advisable to prebook for a safari. The sightings in the core Area - Dhikala is very good these days. Even one of my friend saw tiger and beer the same day here. Beer sighting is very rare in the park. You should prebook the safari since there is entry to very limited number of jeeps and canters in this area. Other areas have less sighting chances comparitively.

Booking safaris in Corbett National Park

Thanks for that - it sounds great. Do you know how you actually book the safaris as I will not be staying nearby.

If you really want to have a good sighting it is always advisable to stay atleast for 2-3 days in the area. The best place to stay for the good sighting is Dhikala rest house which is inside the park. It can be booked either through forest department or Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (they usually sell the fixed packages from Delhi itself). To get a confirmed booking here you can contact any agent in Corbett which will charge a bit extra but you get confirmed accommoation. Same for the safari. You can have canter safari ir jeep safari and een Elephant safari (they are very few here). Good sighting takes atleast 3-4 safaris in the park core zone.

My experience tells me that early morning elephant safaris always have a greater probablity of good sightings..the charm of riding an elephant in to deep, virgin forests very early in the morning in itself is unsurpassed..

Our experience is from a while back, but I recall that if you are staying inside the park (Dhikala?) in the govt. facilities - you can go out with your vehicle (prerferably a jeep) by hiring a 'forest guide'. That seemed like a sure shot way to roam freely.

Also, elephant rides are not too be missed. We did a combination of jeep in the morning and elephant ride in the afternoon. Got lucky to spot the tiger on the elephant...

As a side note, I still remember the view from the guest houses over Ramganga river to be one of the most beautiful I came across, even though the rest houses themselves were nothing to write home about...

There are two ways to book a safari. Either through your hotel if you are staying near corbett or from the Corbett Reception office in Ramnagar which is a few km before the Park.

Yes I have seen a tiger there...more than once.

Wendy,

Dhikala is your best option for staying as well as tiger spotting. As from here only you can book your Elephant safari.
Do stay from minimum of two days where you can sneak in at least two Elephant & two jeep safaris. We made a mistake of staying only one day & were not able to see the tiger. But the location of Dhikala is excellent, worth staying for 2 - 3 days, if you spot a tiger or not.

For Dhikala Room bookings contact :-

Field Director Project Tiger
Corbett National Park
Ramnagar
Dist: Nainital
Phone No: 05947-251489
Fax No. is 05947-253977
