Would appreciate recommendations for accomodation in any of these places, & why they're your favourites. Will be there between mid December & mid January. Preferably not too grotty or noisy, & under 600rp single. Thanks in advance for your contributions!

Mallapuram-its a short trip from chennai, so best done as a day trip.
pondicherry-seaside guest house, of aurobindo shram. Take the sea facing rooms, excellent place to stay.

good luck

Hi K53,

In Madurai I'll reccommend Supreme Hotel in front of Meenaski Temple with a nice Rooftop restaurant with great views of the temple.

In Mahabalipuram go to Sea Breeze Hotel

In my opinion the best thing to do in Pondicherry is to have a two/three hours tour of the town and Sri Aurobindo Ashram and pay a visit to Auroville
only to know how things can be spoiled by the men. Instead to stay in Pondicherry spend few days visiting the temples in Thanjavur and Kumbakonam and the small villages around.

Has anyone stayed at the Greenwoods Beach Resort or the Lakshmi Lodge in Mamallapuram? Am tossing up between the two, and would appreciate it if people would share their personal experiences with either of these places. I've read a little bit about Greenwoods [and there is a brief bit on it in the Hotels Listing Section] but almost nothing about Lakshmi Lodge.

Seaside Guest House

Pondi: I agree about Seaside. My family stayed at the Seaside in Pondi last month and it was likely the best value hotel during the five weeks in India. Absolutely the finest sheets I've ever slept on; you can buy some at Anglo French Textiles. Super clean, decent beds and a staff member offered to walk a long way to a pharmacy for me when I was ill. My wife went, but the offer was nice!

Madurai: On a totally different level it is hard to beat Sri Devi Hotel in Madurai. NOT a great hotel, but the double rooms are only 180 rupees and the view from the hotel roof is absolutely unbeatable; see my web page of photos from Madurai to see what I mean

Mamallapuram: First night we stayed in the Hotel Sea Breeze Annex, just up the road from the main hotel as my girls liked the idea of a pool after a long time on the road. Pool was OK, hotel was overpriced, beds were shit and we bailed out the next morning after being eaten by mozzies. We moved across the road to Siva Guest House; a fraction of the cost, few mozzies, much better beds and a helpful desk guy. Definitely eat at Moonraker's just around the corner. Good food, good portions and good staff

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Anyone got any other recommendations for Madurai?

Ian - I particularly enjoyed your photo album: gorgeous colours, & I love the way you're attracted to people going about their everyday life, or being tourists: thanks for sharing that.

I'd second Ian Mc Allister's recommendation of the Siva Guest House in Mamallapuram. We only paid 200 rupees a night for a basic but very clean room. Best thing was the lovely swinging wicker chair on the balcony outside each room. And, of course, you can always use the pool at the Sea Breeze for their daily non-residents rate.
