accomodation in chennai

I am arriving late from australia into Chennai and would like somewhere to stay before starting my trip around the south. Im planning to head to Pondicherry first. Any suggestions for a first time traveller to India?

What is your budget? How long will you stay in Chennai? What date are you arriving?

well on here i had earlier suggested residency hotel, T nagar , madras ,and some IMers even made a booking there, its a very good hotel and very safe for individual female travellers , u should check that out, the tariff would be approx RS 1500 to Rs 2000.

i also arrived in Chennai early this month. I am now in Goa. When i arrived in Chennai at about 8pm, i had planned to go to YWCA, as i had booked a room there. But when i arrived, i changed my mind and stayed at a lodging near the railway station( as i was heading north). I forget the name now, but its mentioned in Lonely Planet.
If in doubt, try the YWCA.

for R715 you could have AC room at the guest house I used in the summer. No touristy bits like bars or swimming pools, but clean and good service, basic cheap food, and they will collect you from the airport for a reasonable price, even in the middle of the night.

See my entry for Ram Guest House in the Hotels listings.

thanks

Thanks. I will try booking a room at Ram Guest House. I tried booking a room at YWCA from Sydney but its very difficult given no email address. I am planning to stay in Chennai for just 2 days before catching a bus to Pondicherry.

When are you going?

They have non-ac for less, but I don't recommend it unless you are used to that kind of climate.

I stayed there five weeks and liked it. Let us know what you think: recommendation is a big responsibility!

I think a non-ac car at the airport was 350 (you don't need ac for a 20 minute night-time trip).
