I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I would love to get a short translation from English into Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil.

I would like to put a small note in my film bag in case it somehow gets lost. In all my years of travelling, this has never happened, but it would provide some piece of mind.

If anyone could help out, I would certainly appreciate it.

This is what I'm looking to have translated:

------

Hello,

This bag is full of exposed film. I am a working photographic artist, and the contents of this bag mean the world to me. If you happen to find it, I would ask you to please get in touch with me. I would be happy to offer a reward, or my utmost thanks. No questions asked.

------

Thanks.

Gary - are you on a tourist visa or a journalist visa ?

If you are on a tourist visa, there is potentially more at stake than your film bag, here.

Do you plan to take any domestic flights in India?

What did you list as your occupation in your visa application?

------

धन्यवाद.

Gary Indiana,

The above Hindi text is what Google Translate generated from the original English. I ran this Hindi back through Google Translate and the result was close to the original English. Note: I have no knowledge of Hindi at all.

Translate has Tamil but not Malayalam. You may care to try Translate yourself.

Sorry, Uncle, It is not a correct translation of the sentences written in OP

You may write it in following way:

मैं एक फोटोग्राफर हूँ.
फोटो फिल्मों से भरी यह थैली मेरे प्राण से बढ़ कर है.
अगर यह थैली आपको कहीं मिले तो कृपया मुझे लौटाने की कृपा करें.
बिना आपसे कुछ पूछे उचित ईनाम दिया जाएगा.
धन्यवाद!

Prakaant,

Here is the OP's English text:
Hello,

This bag is full of exposed film. I am a working photographic artist, and the contents of this bag mean the world to me. If you happen to find it, I would ask you to please get in touch with me. I would be happy to offer a reward, or my utmost thanks. No questions asked.

------

Thanks.

The following texts are results of Google Translate Hindi to English:

a. Translate OP text English to Hindi to English

The bag is full of exposed film. I am a working photographic artist, and the contents of the bag means the world to me. If you happen to find it, please get in touch with me for so I will ask you. I have a reward, or would be happy to offer my utmost thanks. No questions asked.

b. Translate Prakaant text Hindi to English

I am a photographer.
Bag full of photographic films, it is more important than my life.
If you get it anywhere you please let me return the favor bag.
Awards will be given to you without asking appropriate.
Thank you!

I made these comparisons from curiosity. Clearly a phrasing in one language may lose its meaning when translated word for word into another. Google Translate is known to produce unexpected results when read by someone conversant in both original and target languages. I, knowing no Hindi, had thought Translate had produced a useful result. Clearly, we continue to need real people for translations.

I agree with you, Uncle, that we "need real people for translations" as the translation done by these system generated translations doesn't do justice with the language.

I did not try to put the translator in use,

Further just to put it straight: I know Hindi!

Translation programmes map the input onto a "deep structure" which is then mapped onto the target language. In this case some sentences were translated fairly accurately (as long as one ignores questions of idiom), others produced gibberish. It is always risky to use turns of phrase like if you happen to find in the input as "happen" will invariably be mapped onto its literal sense.
Of course translating back into the original language means that the output is mapped back onto the "deep structure" and then onto the original language thus reproducing the input fairly accurately. So we're neither here nor there!

@Gary Indiana,

Just was curious to know

Will you like to share the reasons for exposing films in digital-age?

Will you be getting different result than the digital-one?

Dr. Rudi: I'm not a journalist, so I don't need a journalist's visa. I appreciate your advice, though. I'll prepare for questions at the border. I don't intend on taking any flights within India, so that should mitigate the problem a bit.

Prakaant: Thank you for taking the time to do the translation, it's a big help and I appreciate it. Insofar as your question regarding why I shoot film, it all boils down to the fact that I really like the look of black and white printed photographs. I've worked in a darkroom (where analog photos are printed) most of my life and am very comfortable with the process. My feeling is, as long as I can still buy film and paper, I'll use it. My camera was made in 1956, and belonged to my father. It's a beautiful tool and it has never really failed me. I value that a lot.

Gary, this is the Malayalam version. Hope it helps. Thanks, made me realize my inadequacy when it comes to translating to my mother tongue (and typing it too).
