Hi all, we are going out to goa in october for six months and hoping to returnevery year for similar time. From previous visits I know that english is very widely spoken but I hate being the ignorant brit abroad and thought I would make the effort to learn the local language. As we've got about four months to go before we leave the uk, I thought I would start nowish. Anyone used any resources that they found helpfull?

Thanks Stuart

I suspect a lot "local" of the people in Goa you meet will be from other parts of India who have come to Goa in search of work and don't speak Konkani. Most of them do speak broken hindi which is used to communicate with Indian tourists. However, for Konkani, here is one resource on the web that I found - http://www.goa-world.com/goa/konkani/

do you think it might be better to learn hindi then. We do intend to do some traveling in the rest of india over the coming years. Just thought it would be more polite to learn the local one.

Here's a starter, I am sure there are more web sites out there with phrases on.

Konkani

Hi,

Okay I did promise to help you . And here is the best link on the net made by Goans to speak Goan Konkani. http://www.goa-world.com . Look for the Konkani Tutor on the site . It has words , speech and wav files for you to try and learn the language. GO more into depth into the site for
Konkani for beginers http://www.goaworld.com/goa/konkani/...nners_only.htm
Names of common fruits and veggies :
http://www.goa-world.com/goa/recipes...di-konkani.htm
Konkani names for common fish:
http://www.goa-world.com/goa/konkani/fishnames.htm

Remember Manglorean Konkani and Goan Konkani though similar is vastly different. ( we can understand them a little bit but not too much ).

So very true. There is the Konkani of the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins, the Saraswat Brahmins, the Chitrapur Brahmins, the Rajapur Brahmins, the Mangalorean Catholics, the Goans & importantly a certain group of Muslims out in Bhatkal speak konkani too. (Forgot about the Kochi konkani, the kudmi konkani and so on........)

You bet. Even the konkani spoken in Bardez(North Goa) is distinctive from that spoken in Canacona(South Goa).

Just stick to English - it is easier.

We have friends from many parts of the world who live in Calangute and we speak a mix of - Hindi - English - Spanish - Kashmiri - Swedish - German -French - Konkani - Cockney and Yorkshire. (all at one time)

We get along fine together by language - sign - or laughter and it is brilliant.

Late at night it can get a little loud when we are all speaking (shouting) in our own language but we do understand each other and have a good time.

The most useful phrase I have learned is Maka .... Naka = I don't want.
Simply insert the English word in the middle eg Maka Taxi naka. If you are hassled in the street with venors then Maka naka or just Naka works well.
Maka ..... zai = I would like
