I'm looking for recommendations on language schools offering Urdu for foreign students? Presumably Delhi, Lucknow and Hyderabad would be the main centers. I've done a bit of googling around, and the American Institute of Indian Studies in Lucknow seems the best regarded/most prestigious place, but unfortunately the programs there appear to be only open to American citizens/those enrolled in American universities. Beyond that I've found Zabaan in Delhi, but no testimonials. So I am looking here for any personal experiences, etc. that people might have had.

and for hyderabad, maybe this will help? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maulana...rdu_University

Do you want to learn spoken Urdu or do you also want to be able to read and write?

I'm primarily interested in learning to read standard/literary Urdu for academic purposes - anything else would be a bonus but not essential.

Try Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh)
Highly ranked Indian state university and one of the best places in India to learn urdu. Good luck.
