Hi,

I am planning a trip to Lakshadweep in second half of September. I have been doing some searches, but I need first-hand experience from some one who has travelled to Lakshadweep within past one year ! I am a budget traveller, so, all these queries to minimize my budget !

I am not planning to take a flight, but ferries to/from Kochi. So, here are some questions related to ferries !

1) the SPORTS ferries seem to have fixed schedules and do not seem to have a drop and pick option. Either you take the whole package or you get nothing ! Is there any option by which I can travel from Kochi to LD by ferry and take the ferry back on its return date and the trip inbetween is how I decide ! I am asking this, because I easily have 8 days and the package only has 4 days. They can't be customised.

2) Are there any cheaper ferries ? I read it somewhere that you can travel by smaller ferries which may take upto 24 hours, but are cheaper. Are they safe ? How do I book ? Tell me the cheapest ferry option please. Is it possible to go to Kochi and enquire about the cheap private ferries leaving in next 2 or 3 days , or will that not work out ?

3) How do I get permit for Lakshadweep ? Any pre requisites ?

4) I guess, Agatti is banned for now. Which are the other islands to visit ? Is night stay restricted/banned on some other islands too ?

5) I am sure you must not have seen people camping with private tents on the island, but, who is in charge there ? I am sure there must not be any law/rule not to pitch up your own tent. I don't mind staying in a homestay later, if someone wakes me up (I am more afraid of humans rather than nature). But, in your personal opinion, do you think camping is possible and/or permitted on the island(s) ?

6) Will there be inter-island transport available (not private, but public transport) by private operators or does one need to plan that too in advance (supposing question 1 returns a positive answer )

Did you try using the search function before posting in bold letters? Here's a similar thread - http://www.indiamike.com/india/laksh...dweep-t220841/

I have the exact same questions. Still no proper answer. I'm keen on 5 and 6.

Hi...

I am planning to visit Lakshadweep in Feb end. Can you please suggest which island I should visit. Also what is the best way to get to Lakshadweep from Kochi. Beside this is cheap accommodation available there, in the range of 1000-1500 per day.
Also how can I book my tickets for ship/ferry from Delhi. Is there any option to buy it online.
Thanks in advance

hi I have been to lakshdweep twice in the last 3 yrs and intend to visit again this year. Have been to bangaram, Kadmat and minicoy. do let me know specific issues that you have. I am not able to understand what do you mean by customized trip... are you meaning that u dont follow the ship but set up your own itenerary at your pace? If that is what you have in mind then sure u can! i also plan my trip as per my needs and never go hopping on the ship... was there in minicoy for 6 days... earlier was in bangaram for 1 days and 3 days in kadmat...

To plan your trip coordinate directly with SPORTS. they are slow but sure! So you need to plan your trip way in advance as last minutes changes by them can sure take away the intended joy of the panned trip. Best way to force them is correspond through emails and keep sending them email reminders.

Pls do let me know if you have any other queries

Modertor Note:

Refrain from using SMS speak. Use 'you', 'please' instead of 'u', 'pls'. Thank you.

I think your brst bet is to talk to SPORTS or an Indian travel agency that arranges such vic sits. I don’t think the smaller and cheaper ferries such as MV Minicoy or MV Amindivi are operational. The ferries usually visit the islands such as Kadmat every three days so you could go to Kadmat for six days. Ferries do not go to Bangaram but you could take a ferry or plane to Agatti and then transfer by boat to Bangaram or go to Kadmat and then take a boat to Bangaram and then back to Kadmat to get the return ferry or transfer by boat back to Agatti. None of these options are cheap and dependent on numbers of people travelling.
There is tented accommodation on Tinnakara which is an island in the Bangaram lagoon. You would not be allowed to take your own tent and camp on any of the islands as your itinerary would not allow you to get a permit that allows you to visit these islands.
Yhere is no night time ban on Kadmat, Bangaram or Tinnakara.
Kadmat and Bangaram are not cheap places to visit but Tinnakara maybe cheaper.
In conclusion I would suggest to contact SPORTS who may be slow in communicating (contact Mr. Hussain) as they are able to explain what is possible, arrange the whole trip and iddue the necessary permit.
