Is Lakshadweep open to tourists yet?

I was planning on visiting the Lakshadweep Islands in September and was seeing if anybody knew if any of the resorts on Islands are open as of yet? I can see Indian Airlines are operating flights still.

Seems very sad that such a beautiful place is going through problems as this, I would very much like to visit.

many thanks

I visited lakshadwip in December but I came to know that Sports has stopped the trips for tourists since February for some reason and have not opened yet :( there are only arrangements for the passengers who live there

I cannot find any up to date information on websites about visits to the Lakshadweep Islands. I have sent and e-mail to SPORTS asking for information but given their history of poor communications I am not holding my breath waiting for a response.

mattme Jul 19th, 2012 16:25

I emailed some of the resorts too, but no response. Guess that may be the best way to find out, but i'm betting nothing is happening there right now. Hopefully soon.

Anyone recommend any beach resort down southern india at the middle of july that might be enjoyable. Would the monsoon have passed by then?

July will be monsoon time, but how severe the monsoon will be, I've no idea, maybe just an hour of rain in the morning and an hour in the evening, but I've really no idea, one thing's for sure though, the sea is untouchable at that time of year.

I really wanted to go to the Maldives, but they demand an arm as a deposit, the other arm to complete payment, then they take your legs for on-site charges and taxes, so I was also looking into the Lakshadweep Islands.

The 2 main alternatives to the Lakshadweep Islands (for my requirements) are the Andamans (not as difficult to get to as I first thought) and a North Kerala luxury hotel, the Taj, Bekal.

Their best room (with private pool) is only 170 (if booking for 3 days or more) and the hotel looks awesome, being both on the beach and backwaters.

I've stayed in a Taj hotel before and loved it, the service is fantastic, however, take your own spirits and mixers, and allow about 70 per couple per day for food.

As for the Andamans, Barefoot Havalock looks and sounds out of this world, and even if you include the airfares, it works out about the same price as the Taj, Bekel for a 6-7 day stay.

Though you may have to rely on sea plane transfers between Port Blair and Havalock, but they're not too expensive.

The Lakshadweep Islands are really loosing out, it just beggars belief what is going on.

One may go to Andaman in all season . It is a nice place. There are regular flights .There is ship service also, that is a bit boring . But Andaman is not an alternative for Lakshadwip, every place has its own beauty .Andaman is more commercialized.

Well it is over a week since I sent an e-mail to SPORTS requesting information about the coming season -no reply. Why am I not surprised? If I had treated potential customers like this I would have been out of business pretty damn quick!

steven_ber Jul 26th, 2012 21:58

Clive, your frustrations are shared by so many, I really want to go to Lakshadweep in February, but I can't wait for ever, I will soon have to book an alternative, probably Havelock.

Where's India's tourism minister?

Where's the man elected to be in charge of the Lakshadweep Islands?

Where's the Lakshadweep tourism department?

Are the shipping companies saying anything?

The airlines?

Can you imagine if the same thing happened on the Isle Of White?

CliveG Jul 26th, 2012 22:19

Hi Steve,
It's the rudeness in not replying that gets me as much as anything. The Lakshadweep Administration website has ziltch on it except about the court action that was started by Casino Hotels two years ago - they don't seem to keep that up to date. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!
If it happened on the Isle of Wight us Pompeyites would just tow it out to sea and let it sink!!!
If you do think about the Andermans let me know as I have a good contact there who runs a dive company.

I actually made mistake before and meant to ask what the west coast Kerala or Goa, would be like in the middle of September. Would the monsoon have passed by then and seas calm enough to swim in or is it still a bit early in the day?

gautam Jul 27th, 2012 22:46

Me and my family had plans to visit lakshadweep +/- 2months around July. The usual (re)search on google revealed that its indeed difficult to get there. Dropped the plan :(

I'm not the man in the picture (Jonathan).

There was a big effort by many indiamikers to draw attention to the disappearance of Jonathan, but this effort and the discussion could have been missed by a tourist just looking for train information, so I added the photo and signature (words below most posts) to alert anyone who may have seen or spoken to Jonathan.

Ah! Right. That is a good way to spread the information.
