Hi Guys,

Lot many IMers are heading to Ladakh this time and I am sure that many would be interested in activites other than site seeing of Nubra, Pangong and Tso moriri.

So as an option lets start a thread where we can get info on Rafting in Ladakh Region.

Please give details like Route, No. of days, rough costing and contact of agencies that conduct these trips.

So calling all the experienced IMers for their valuable inputs.

Rafting is def. possible in Ladakh. But only for 3 - 4 months unlike Uttaranchal where it is possible for majority of the months.
It can be done on Indus & Zanskar rivers.
However as mentioned by navin the Zanskar expedition in for many days & also it costs around Rs. 60K - Rs. 80K per person.
One days rafting can be done on following routes.
Near Hemis - Phey
Phey - Nimmu
Nimmu - Saspol
They are much cheaper.

The first & second route should cost about Rs. 900 - Rs. 1000 per person. No idea about the third one.

Yes the local travel agents organize rafting trips.

You can do an amazing stretch from Chilling to Nimu...on the Zanskar...doesnt cost all that much... Rs.2000 or so..per person.

Avoid rafting on the Indus...its quite slow at most places as it is well settles by the time it reaches Ladakh from Tibet.

My friend at Himalayan Journeys (Start of Chanspa Road) will do this route for 1100 INR per person (other places charge 1400). Its got a few level 3 rapids and its a good beginners rafting route with enough rapids to make it more than a float down the river (like the upper Indus). Bigger rapids (up to level 5) are found on the lower Indus around Alchi and also on the Padum to Chilling stretch of the Zanskar for these multi day routes you need to get a group together and the prices will depend on the number of people. The Chilling Nimu route is done almost every day during the season so no need to find a group.

I did rafting on Chilling - Nimoo stretch in July. They charged 1200 Rs per person. This was my first experience. As far as I know, there are 3-4 rapids of level 4 grade. It is really nice to do if you really love some adventure

I would suggest you to take Chilling-Nimmu. It had some rapids up to grade 3. It was amazing experience overall.
I believe the stretches you are talking about are from Indus river. When we were in Leh 2 years back, there was less water in Indus basin. That means no hard rapids.
Still you can check with the organizers anytime for their suggestions.

Thank you very much! I take it the Chilling-Nimmu route can be done in a day, as we need to be in Leh that night. Any guide company recommendations?
