Trekking over Pin-Parbati and Parang La passes

Hi,
We are planning to trek from Manikaran to Tso Moriri over Pin-Parbati and Parang La passes, starting next week (around 20th of July). Does anyone have any recent information on the trail situation? Are these passes open?
Thanks

Himachal

You need to check out the flood situation in Himachal before venturing out on your trek.

Kinnaur district washed out

The Passes are open. If you walk all the way, no problems.

If you need to take a bus back, cutting short the trek [for whatever reasons] THERE IS NO BUS BACK. Five bridges in Kinnaur and Spiti have been washed out due to a dam burst on the river Pareechu. [just ten days ago]

You will be able to come back in stages only [in between] provide for treble the no of days.

If you go all the way to tso moriri, then things in Ladakh are better. Transportation is normal.

Please post your trek pics after the trek on IndiaMike. I am going to cross the Pin Parvati Pass [part of your route] on 21st August.

HAPPY TREKKING!!

AndreasW, Thanks!

My treks are always planned with the full moon and new moon in mind!! For the same "weather" reasons!! Will you be trekking? If yes, what route?

Thx for replays!

Hi All!
Thanks for the replays!

AndreasW and AvidTrekker could you please write me more about the planning of trips "with full moon and new moon in mind". What do you mean by this?

AndreasW great pics!! Congratulations!

BTW! What is your experience, is it possible to change Euros in Spiti and Ladakh, or is it better to bring USD cash and USD TC?

Is that a contingency plan in case yu need to walk during night? i just thought that in himlayas half the sky will be behind the imposing montain range , so does it help? can you really depend on moon for night travel?

cant think of any other link between moon and trekking but i am blank about trekking anyway

Your guesses are nowhere near.

The answer is obvious.... but....

Its a mystery.... I prefer to keep it that way on the net. Even among veteran trekkers very few know it. Some knowledge can be imparted ONLY on a trek....

:D :D ;) cool:

The pattern of snow fall and subsequent snow melt decides the crossing lines. Especially the formation of crevasses which form anew almost every year. This varies every year at all snow bound passes. On my Pin Parvati crossing in 2005, I had NO crevasse en route due to the previous winter's heavy precipitation. This year is likely to be similar (its still snowing).

Parang La is crossed by pack mules. They can be hired from Kibber in Spiti or Korzok in Ladakh.
