Hello!
We are a group of 10, ages ranging from 13 to 72, planning a trip to Ladakh in October 2018. We are travelling from Kolkata and will be going to Ladakh via Srinagar-Kargil and returning by flight. Here are my queries:
1) How long will it take to travel from Srinagar to Kargil? I know it can be done in a day, but we want to avoid long journeys (above 5-6 hrs).
2) What is a good time to target crossing Zoji La pass? Is it true that the road from Sonmarg is blocked at times (around 11 am) to facilitate smooth movement of traffic? Then does one target crossing Sonmarg around 10 am?
3) Can taxi operators from Leh pick us up from Srinagar/Sonmarg/Kargil? Any idea what the fare difference would be from the 3 places? (We have had Leh travel operators assuring us they can pick us up from Srinagar, but want to validate that claim)

Thank you in advance for your help!

What are your exact dates ? I have similar plans .
Yes Let drivers can pick you up from Srinagar. But it's a bit hush-hush affair. I suggest that instead of Srinagar , once you reach you spend the first night at Sonamarg. That will facilitate you to cross Jozi-La very early. Start from Sonamarg at around 7 , and by evening spend the next night at Lamayuru, so you can avoid staying at stinky Kargil. Next day reach Leh. But you will have to travel longer than 5/6 hours everyday.

Yes , Kargil kind of sucks. The Ladakhi ( JK10 plates ) car wont be able to take you to Sonmarg though.

Thank you for your response!
We are tentatively starting around Oct 13 and will be there till Oct 23. It will be good to 'bump' into you there. :-)
How long a journey is it from Sonamarg to Lamayuru? And if we take a late afternoon flight into Srinagar, can we proceed to Sonamarg the same evening?

Thanks for your response. Do you mean the Leh cabs can pick us up from Srinagar but not from Sonamarg?

This is our tentative itinerary:
Day 1: Sonamarg
Day 2: Kargil/Lamayuru (stay options?)
Day 3: Leh
Day 4: Leh
Day 5: Turtuk
Day 6: Turtuk
Day 7: Pangong Tso
Day 8: Pangong Tso
Day 9: Leh
Day 10: Leh
Day 11: Delhi to catch Rajdhani back to Kolkata
Given that we are travelling mid-late October, should we book accommodations beforehand? Also, is it advisable to spend 2 nights at Pangong Tso (we want to take it easy, the idea being getting to know each place better) since it will be colder I believe?
What will be the tentative taxi fare for the entire trip?

Two days by the Pangong Tso well , you could also add Tso-Mori-ri too. I am not booking any accommodation beforehand, plenty options and some discounts to be had during Oct.
Get a quote for taxi drop upto Leh. Then bargain their for the rest of the trip at Leh itself, works better.

Pre booking is not necessary for better price in October. You won't get the tented accommodation either at Pangong Tso or Tsomoriri. As already suggested you may opt staying one night each at both the places.

But isn't it also true that most hotels close down in October, reducing the number of options? And if the tented accommodations at Pangong and Tso Mori ri are not available in October, where does one stay?

That's the panic button that the Hotelier's want us to press, prebook and leverage the price. Chill. The no. of available accomodations far outnumber the visitors in most places. If you don't get a room somewhere , you will at the next place.
