@Leapfrog - thanks, thts a quite descriptive travel log! I always has a wish to visit Leh/Ladakh, but didn't have such descriptive details yet (except the agencies has their own tour plans). Can you tell me, what was the overall cost starting from Shimla and back to Delhi (including airfare Leh to Delhi) - and this flight did you booked it after reaching at Leh? Also, it seems there is a gap of travel between Shimla to Manali - did you booked any private car or just by a bus. And thanks again for your so nice post!

Regards.

If you would like to go for Bus, your best bet would be between Mid July to Mid September. The later you go in season, leaner would be the season and cheaper would be the cost. Also roads improve and water crossings go low in later half of the season. But temperature starts dipping from Sep mid and high passes start receiving snow.

So you have plan to make a best fit.

Kindly answer my below questions:

1. Advance ticket booking HPTDC (Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation) how to do it? Online? phone?
2. Booking of hotels along the way at simal, manali, keylong, leh (definitely something nice)how to do it? Online? phone?
3. Best way to go around in all the locations (simal, manali, keylong, leh )
4. Places to stop over and stay over night between simla and leh.
5. Available mode of transport, preferably the best option.
6. Places to eat along the way from simla to leh.
7. The travel gear to be carried (sleeping bags, etc…)
8. I prefer to travel during the day time and sleep at night. How can this be achieved.

Thanks in advance !
It is what it is !

1.http://hptdc.nic.in/bus.htm
2. Never done this in advance , never had any real problems beyond walking around for an hour in Shimla. Mostly , but not only travelled off season.
3. Plenty of cabs in all of these locations. Leh has a fixed price list that you can check in every cab. I plod around a lot on foot , and with local buses along the valley.
4.Sleep in Sissu/Keylong/JIspa/Darcha between Manali and Leh. DonŽt sleep at The Vomit Hilton

Hello Guys,

This coming year August I'm planning to travel Ladakh. But I am not very much aware of the permits those could be necessary during my stay there. I wants to do the same tour plan that once done by this thread starter Leapfrog, but what are the requisite permits those I would be needed and where from I can get them (?) can I get them after reaching to Leh as well (?)

My travel route would be:

- Staying at Leh for 10 days
- Choglamsar, Sindhu Darshan, Thiksey, Stakna
- Likir, Alchi
- Pangong Tso
- Khardung-la (optional)
- Tso Moriri

Any suggestion would be great help guys. Thanks.

You can stay in any of the guest houses, decent guest house would cost no more than 500rs.
and the guest house people will provide you all the information needed.

You can get the permits in Leh itself, and on your itinerary you will only need permits for Pangong Tso, Khardong and Tso Moriri, so your itinerary is good. When you arrive, start arranging your permits, and they will surely be ready before you need them.

Foreigners need to do the permits with a travel agent in Leh and need two foreigners to get the permit; Indians can do it directly with the govt authorities and don't need a group.
