Hi,

I will be flying to Leh from Delhi with family. Will it be advisable to travel directly to Kargil and make night stay considering following points:

1) As I read on other threads the sleeping altitude is what matters for AMS. As Kargil is at lower altitude is it preferable to stay in Kargil instead of Leh on day one?

2) I am aware that on route passes are at much higher altitude than Leh. But I do not intend to stop or do any sightseeing.

3) On second day will plan to visit Dras and return to Leh with on the way sightseeing.

When you are flying to Leh why would you want to travel to Kargil? Leh to Kargil by road will take around 7-8 hours.

Flight arrives at 9AM that gives enough time for 7-8hrs travel.
Want to stay at Kargil for 2 reasons. First Dead is closer from their so second day can visit in morning and then return to Leh. Second staying at lower altitude will help acclimatize better.

If you are going for acclimatization, then it's not necessary. Stay in leh itself. Anything special in dras?

Major misconception. First night above or below three thousand meters is a key factor in AMS. Go down to Sonam Norbu hospital any day in high season and you’ll see tourists just being reformed from that idea after flying in. The same practically never happens with those that stop overnight in Kargil on the Srinagar-Leh run.

The practical compromise here is going down to Alchi or Ule Tokpo for the first night : a lot closer ( and nicer ) than Kargil , and four hundred meters lower than Leh. Diamox also helps -as a frequent guest I cant recall anyone with bad symptoms that also had used it preventively. Either way for the vast majority AMS is hangover country - the point of following guidelines is to have more days closer to full capacity.

That's encouraging. Alichi or Ule Tokpo is truly an option. But on second day want to visit Dras (War Memorial) which is much closer to Kargil. If I stay in Alichi then on second day travel will be Alichi-Dras-Leh. That could be a stretched one (apprx 500km) for single day. I know there is nothing much to see in Kargil town. But travel will be split over two days.

From all the blogs I read nobody has done this So concerned that am I doing something too theoretical? Or Am I missing something to consider?

One more input about my travel. - It will be 2nd week of November-2018

The river bends beautifully in kargil.

You could spend a few hours checking out the maitreya Buddha at mulbekh and the little monastery up top the mountain across the road. So make it two nights, one in Alchi and one in Mulbekh. And then on the way back sleep in Alchi again while covering lamayuru, basgo, etc. That makes it three nights.

November is quite late though, what about snow?

Thank you. Any suggestion for stay at Alchi?

It's winter (start of winter) trip so snow and cold is accounted for. From blogs have learnt that passes within Ladakh will be open. Because of heavy snow fall there could be road closure, so will keep the schedule flexible.

Yes , there could be snowfall , but nowadays Srinagar-Leh stays open a lot longer . Last four years it closed between mid-December to early January. There was still a lot of fresh fruit in the market when I flew out last time.

I went in Aug'12 so its been a while, but the driver found the place for us. I remember there were apricot trees and lots of fruit - that's hardly a qualifier as every place had those. I doubt you could go wrong with most places in Alchi, the people were so nice. Since you're going quite after the season you'd have a choice am sure.

Leh-Kargil on day one

The island in the middle of river is good for picnics in Kargil.

Leh temperature would be in minus territory in 2nd week of November. A lot of hotel tend to close for winter. Just make sure your hotel is open for business.

so far your posts has been encouraging about doing first day travel (towards lower altitude). In earlier posts you had suggested to make a stop at Alchi. Do you see any problem going all the way to Kargil?
