A jeep would definitely be the best option, some jeep tour companies will suggest that you do the journey over 2 days stopping overnight at Sarchu/Darcha, this is not advisable since you are likely to get very ill (or even Die!!!)[whoa] due to altitude sickness from not acclimatising properly. Share jeeps & private jeeps will do the journey in one day but it takes anything from 16-20hrs. The share jeeps charge Rs1200 front seat Rs1000 middle Rs800 rear (not recommended).Private jeeps charge around Rs11-13000 depending how well you negotiate. If you look in the Ladakh section you will see posts by Vistet that go into much more detail about this journey.

From the places you are visiting it sounds like you are interested in Buddhism, if so it may be worth your while visiting Rewalsar lake & Padmasambhava's cave, it's 1hr from Mandi which you will pass on your way to/from Manali/Bir See this link & photo's.

In fact if you visited Rewalsar you could break up the journey to Bir with a stop at Rewalsar & it would make good sense for you to go Hardwar train to Ambala bus to Chandigargh then bus to Mandi you could stay in Mandi overnight at the Raj Mahal former home to the royal family of Mandi.
