Hi friends,

Myself and my wife wish to undertake a ladakh vacation in early June this year. We have 8 days in hand and we will be travelling from Kolkata > Delhi >Leh and back the same way.

1. Please suggest me an itinerary which can include the best places and which also can be fitted in this short span. Please keep a day in leh if needed for acclimatization.

2. Please advise whether I need to book a complete tour package through a travel agent. If yes, can you please let me know the expected cost for 2 people for a 6N/7D package? And kindly suggest some good tour operators please.

3. If booking through a travel agent will be costly..please suggest an alternative arrangement ? Should i be booking transport after reaching Leh ? If yes, are they charged based on the trip and are there any local tour operators offering good packages. please advice.

Regards,
Samrat.

and please let me know some good hotels also please.

For someone to suggest tour operators give your tentative budget. I am sure some fellow IMers will come up with feedback and recommendations on the tour operators.

The main point about acclimatization : between Manali and Leh youŽll spend time at the same altitude as Everest Base Camp ( 5300+ meters ) , and you are in no way acclimatized to sleep higher than Leh ( like Sarchu/The Vomit Hilton , seven hundred plus meters higher than Leh) after a few nights in Manali. Keylong on the other hand is four hundred meters lower than Leh , a good spot for a first acclimatization night. More pointers here :

Sleepless in Sarchu

Also keep in mind that is not guaranteed that Manali-Leh is open early June : last three years openings have been in June. Updates on my blog below.

I am sorry to say this.
But Manali-leh road trip is really not a good idea at all especially in the month of June, thanks to the ice melts and the approaching monsoons in the state of H.P.
Expect to get stuck at Marhi and rohtang pass for hours in jams!
I feel, It would be a wise idea to postpone it to september or first week of october, The weather will be excellent during that time, dry as usual and so will be the road conditions..

But still, if u want to go ahead with the road trip.
Please Please! take the AMS issue (Altitude mountain sickness) seriously...
Best place to stay overnight is at Jispa or Darcha from manali to leh..and then continue your journey towards Leh...

I was going to protest here , but I got word from Leh yesterday that it has actually snowed a number of times even down in Leh , which is a rare thing. This together with avalanche warnings and heavy snowfall in Manali

and recent avalanches from the Kashmiri end , makes high odds for a late opening of the inroads to Ladakh... again.

Manali-Leh advice here

Well, again BRO has set the target to open Manali-Leh by April 15,. a very optimistic ask but miracles does happen. Not to forget they had similar deadline last year and eventually the highway opened in June. Vistet is a pioneer in monitoring status to high roads and you must follow his blog for the updates.

Coming back to topic: with just 8 days in hand it will not at all be a good decision to attempt Manali - Leh highway unless you only want to enjoy the highway not Ladakh. Best option is to fly-in for 8 days, acclimatize for about 3 days, may be stay at Alchi initial day and then explore all the tourist destinations in remaining 5 days.

I agree with #9 above. The road from Manali is not at all guaranteed to be open in early June this year, as it has been cloudy and often snowy all winter, so there is probably more snow than usual up in the mountains. Even if it does open in early June, it will almost surely be in rough condition and you may face long delays.

Fly in. If you book tickets early they may not be very expensive. I agree you can spend the first night in Alchi or Uletokpo to avoid altitude problems the first night. http://www.overlandescape.com/hotel/...ture-camp.html
