Hello all,
I have just sleepily arried in Delhi. My orginal plan was to head up from here to Manali by train then slowly make my way to to Leh. However i've just been told that the Manali-Leh route is unpassable due to the weather.

The hostel owner where i am staying suggests I head to Srinagar (via his travel agent friend of course) then from Srinigar to Ladakh. Is this a good idea.. I know very little about Srinigar as a place and the security situation etc.

Can anyone advise a better route I could take to ladakh? If I were to head to Manali now would I be stuck there for a long time? Also in terms of trains to these places, would I be able to book a place fairly quickly or is there a long waiting list. phew I'm feeling a litle ovewhelmed right now!

I would check flights from New Delhi to Leh.

The Srinagar - Leh route might be better than Manali-Leh in terms of altitude sickness, but that's about it. I have not traveled that way before, but I hear the road is usually in poor condition, not to mention the instability of the region. I know that there was an IED explosion in Srinagar in April of this year, and several gun battles even more recently in Sopore (about 40km from Srinagar).

It's up to you, but I wouldn't.

Sorry zilali,

I do feel obliged to add that several members of the forum have gone that way recently without any problems. And just because I wouldn't go it alone as a white female, obviously doesn't mean you shouldn't. To be fair and all

If you can afford it fly to Leh from Delhi then come back by road to Manali, rains start to recede south mid aug. It all depends how long you have? if you fly into Leh you will need 1st 2-3 days to acclimatise. There are no trains to Manali, you can take a train to Chandigarh then bus or toy trin from Kalka above Chandigarh to Shimla then bus.KK

Thanks for the advice.

From what I gather the Delhi to Manali road is fine so I should have no problems getting there. After speaking to a few people here i've decided to just head to Manali tomorrow. My trip is 9 weeks long so i'm happy to wait around in Manali before i head to Leh if necessary. I will let you know the conditions when I do.

I suspect that your friendly hostel owner was trying to scam you .. and that later events may prove him right. Today (24th ) IMD has issued a severe weather warning for HP , and heavy rain in both Kullu & Keylong local forecasts.High water levels in the Beas river. You may have a better shot bypassing the Rohtang by going via Shimla-Tabo-Kaza-Kunzum... the major risk here would be of never arriving in Leh because you like Spiti too much.
