Anyone know how best and where to get flights to Leh from Delhi. We are going to trek in the Garhwal then fly to Leh in late April. Can we pick up tickets then on short notice or do we have to fix our dates (hard to do) and get them in advance ?

Emailed some delhi agents and got no replies !

the price of flights for 'non-residents' is an inflated US$ price which you can't easily avoid. Delhi-Leh is listed on Jet Airways site as $117 o/w with a daily departure. (Indian airlines probably similar) Jet has several offices in Australia and is a Quantas partner so reserving a ticket from home should be no problem -- there is probably an internet booking option as well, if you want to root around Jet's web-site:

No idea as to how heavily booked flights to Leh would be in April but in my limited flying experience in India, it is good to book early. Perhaps there is some 'flight status' info on the Jet or IA site to indicate at least the current situation which you could use for guidance.

I have a suspicion that Jet Airways have a quota of "inflated" dollar prices and it is easier for foreigners to get tickets and change them at a short notice than for locals.

For eg last April it was easy to book and to change the flight to Leh: we arrived at the airport for the flight only to find out that our flight left the day before, but we went to the Jet Airways window outside the departures and got tickets changed to fly the same day. Can't say whether we were extremely lucky or it was normal. I used to be able to change Jet Airways tickets at a very short notice that's why I think the highly priced tickets get a priority.

Apart from a bunch of foreigners over Easter weekend who came to Leh to "cool down" there were hardly any foreign tourists.

1: If you are below 30 years of age on the date of the flight - you are eligible for a 25% discount on the airfare. Otherwise you will have to pay the full fare.

2. certain dates like the Hemis festival time et, the flights are fully booked so BOOK beforehand.

3: April isn't really the best time to go to Leh.
