You can.
People are trustable there in general. My friend was carrying one and was using for family etertainment in the evening.

My 2 cents:

Well you also need to avoid switching it ON especially on high mountain passes. Generally, HDDs operate around 10K Feet mark only as mentioned by the manufacturers. Although not certain that your HDD will crash if you switch the ON above 10K feet but the chances of HDD crash start to increase as the altitude increase.

Secondly, always shutdown while you travel. Never leave it on stand by or hibernate options. This will increase the shock endurance of the laptop.

And as nomad says, just ensure it is worth the overhead

Remember one dvd write in Leh costs Rs. 150-200/- as mentioned in every net cafe.... So if you can manage your GH owner to make use of his pc it'll be better. Also take some blank dvd's with you... or take a high capacity memory card for your camera.

Nice idea,

Compared to what i lugged around on my leh bike trip, its better off to carry chargers and 16 GB pen drives ..!

And also the concern of not being able to use the laptop as much made it something i will not carry on my next trip .
