We are a couple of families going to be in Leh during late May. And we are looking for budget accommodation, say less than 1000-1200 per day but with attached bathroom.

The hotel websites are little help showing as the do fancy hotels -3000-5000+ per day.
I see that there are a plenty of guesthouses in off-fort road and Changspa area and Tukcha Road. And I want to ask experienced people here
1) how to contact these small guesthouses
2) Some recommendations

Thanks

Just turn up, the town is never full.

Get a cab to take to the roads in question and check them out

Thanks, I see from the google map that the angle between Upper Tukcha Road and Zangsti road that meet at Leh city centre has many guest houses like Paul, Kunga, Skitpo, Atisha, Indus.
Is this the place one should try to look for budget guest houses?
There is another place--a narrow lane with a small bridge over a nullah that flows down from Shanti Stupa--where there is a good dosa restaurant. But the name of this area escapes me,

That is Changspa. You will find many budget guest houses there too. But its about 15 minutes walk from main market of Leh. Though good restaurants are nearby, so food is not a reason to go to main market.

There are plenty of good budget hotels. Do not get fooled by service providers over the internet. They always mention much higher cost than the reality.
During my last visit to Leh (in July 2015) we walked on "old Leh Road" and found many hotels b/w price range 1-1.5K. I recommend to search for a hotel by your own (not along with your wife) as they may take advantage of your neediness (thats what i do normally).

We stayed at "Gongma Guest House" for two days and Hotel Lasermo there after. Gongma Guest House is kinda home (not home stay) being run by an old couple and suits to your budget as well (I paid 1200)

Thanks kashi_rock.
But the Gongma does not appear to be bookable. Did you just walk up to it?
Do you happen to have phone number of Gongma. We will just book a day first.

Thanks to all.
we stayed at Chali Villa in a lane off Zangsti Road --just opposite Bon Appetit Restaurant at Rs 1400 for a large room including an extra bad.
Ti-Sei is also not bad with Rs 600 and Indus at Rs 1000.
