Hello! I want to enquire what is a good budget place to stay (about INR 300 a night) for a solo traveler in Leh. I have read about and liked Oriental, Shanti and Silver Cloud guesthouses though I do not know the prices for the last two. A clean place with attached bath (hot water), breakfast and a good/great view should do in terms of amenities. However, it is best if it not be too far from places of eating/shopping and so on as I would like to be out in the evening till whatever time it is safe for women to roam about (I understand there is little street lighting in Leh).

Hi,

me too travelling to leh. looking for the same info on hotel as I am too travelling solo.

I have read in a good number of sites that there are lot of homestays and small hotels that provide rooms in 200-300 range in the changspa area and fort road area. Not sure how true it is.

anyway I will find that out on August 21st. lolz

cheers
Paddy

Hi Paddy! Thanks for your reply. Once you get into Leh maybe you can tell me what good places you came across? I will reach around 25th.
Also here are some sites to help you in your search.

This is an official government site (it seems) with an exhaustive list of guesthouses and their rates: http://leh.nic.in/WHERE%20TO%20STAY.htm
But it does not tell you what the rooms are like and so on...

Also tripadvisor offers a review (with pictures sometimes) for a few of these http://www.tripadvisor.in/Hotels-g29...ir-Hotels.html

You can check that out as well...

Well Shanti GH can offer you a double room for Rs 500-600, there is Asia Guest house as well on the Changspa road with similar price range. This price is for attached bathroom not shared. I guess Asia does have rooms with shared baths and could be cheaper. There are GHs at Fort Road as well which can offer a bit lesser amount deal but I am not aware of them.

I had an RS300 room at Dolma GH, off Fort Road. It was fine, although bucket shower. Nice garden.

Accomodation in Leh is not that cheap in high season. There is a lane close to the center, with many GH: Indus, Malpak, Tisei, and so on. Some do have single rooms for 200 or 250 rps. Otherwise standard price for a double: 300 - 400 without bath, 500 + with bath.

Hi Willemspie! I think you are speaking of Changspa. Sadly I am also finding out that prices are steep just now. I have been dialing the shortlisted guesthouses and they are all booked to capacity or not taking my call. I tried Silver Cloud - they are completely booked. Oriental - only have rooms available in INR 1700 range . Shanti GH room is for about INR 700. Old Ladakh, Gomang and Jigmet are not really answering my calls so I have no clue how to get information.

This is a problem since I am planning to fly to Leh. I fully expect some effects of altitude sickness. I wanted to have a confirmed resting place for atleast two nights.

I can also see that very few places offer extremely few rooms to single travelers. That is another unwelcome effect of traveling solo. So I am kind of stuck.

Hi Dheeraj! Thanks again. I did try the hotel number but no one picked up.
I also tried Lakrook Garden Guesthouse...they have some vacant rooms...thankfully. So do Dorje guesthouse. No clue as to how good or bad these places are.

Also someone who visits Ladakh often enough told me he has never fixed his accommodation beforehand. It is quite easy to move around and find a place to live.

Yes, I guess once you are in Leh (and bachelor )it is easy to search for accommodation and find one. I usually book anywhere perhaps only when I go with my wife and that too very rare

I don't know how easy or difficult it may be but I am not finding a place to book beforehand. One of them was kind enough to tell me to call a day in advance and otherwise my options of booking from here seem slim. While what you say holds true for the most part..in view of possible AMS and being a single woman I would like to book in advance for at least first two days of my journey. It does not seem possible to me anymore...
