Hi,

I will be visiting Manali around May 25 and planned the return trip by train. Booked tickets in the Himachal Express leaving Ambandaura railway station at 20.10. Does anybody have an idea about the best mode to reach the station. In case taxi, what would be the approx fare and the time taken. Also about the station itself does it have good restaurants nearby.

Thanks.

Amb Andaura is around 255 km from Manali.and there are very few buses to the place.

I would have cancelled the ticket and freshly book ticket from Ambala Cantt or Chandigarh.

Thanks for the reply. Have to catch a flight from IGI Delhi at 12.30 p.m. hence this train would be ideal. If go via Chandigarh will have to book a hotel for overnight stay.

Route suggested by you would be very tiring and time consuming.

There are plenty of trains from Chandigarh and Ambala Cantt. You may take direct bus to Delhi also (originating from Manali to Delhi), and Chandigarh. And you will not have to book any hotel also.

Hello

Thanks to you I now know of Amb Duara.

Looked up the station wiki says it's got no services and is a small station. Also Google maps show the location and it looks deserted.

If you want to take this train only then I would suggest that you change your tickets to boarding from Ambala junction where this train arrives at 1:30 am and departs at 1:40 am. Ambala junction is a big station and has a good waiting room. I would suggest that you plan to leave manali by 9 am so that you get to Ambala by 7 pm.

Travelling from manali to ambala will be easier then travelling to Amb Duara. There may be buses / share taxis to Ambala or for even a taxi will not charge return from Ambala as they can get return passenger from Ambala. For Amb Duara expect to pay a higher per km rate + return.

Alternatively there are HRTC Volvo buses from manali at around 3 pm which would get you to Delhi ISBT by 7 am. Enough time to get to Airport particularly if you use the airport metro.

If you do take the train from Amb Duara pl come back here and let us know your experience. The location is certainly interesting.

All the best
Mani

Hi,

If you can obtain an early morning departure from Manali by bus or taxi to Shimla, you may find the following works for you?

Train Shivalik Express 52452 departs Shimla 17.50pm and arrives Kalka 22.35pm

Train Kalka Mail 12312 departs Kalka at 23.55pm and arrives Old Delhi at 0630am.

You save on a hotel cost, and have plenty of time to reach the airport!

Otherwise, the through bus service seems a sensible option?

Ed.

Try Kiratpur

In addition to Ambala and Chandigarh, Kiratpur can be considered. Kiratpur lies on the Manali-Chandigarh and the Manali-Delhi route - it is the point where the rail and road diverge. Most, if not all buses from Manali to Delhi or Chandigarh will pass through. I checked for buses here -
here, but find that you can book on only one ordinary bus (Though the timings should suit you). Booking on any bus to Chandigarh should get you there.

The advantage of Kiratpur over Chandigarh is that one can travel on the Himachal Express itself! From Ambala, one won't be able to get a decent night's rest.

Clever idea, btw, by booking on a train to save the hotel cost.

Thanks for update. I am travelling with kids 12 and14 and bit tense that experiments may not work. Maybe I have become defensive. As for saving the hotel cost this was not planned. Since travelling by car to Chandigarh means I would get either kalka shatabdi or indore express which would take me to Delhi the same day. Then what.. either hotel or wait at the station. Both not comfortable. In fact I even called the Taxi union office at Manali to understand the time taken to Amb Andaura and the cost. The time would be 7 hrs and approx 6500. Bus journey to Delhi was ruled out as not physically feasible. Connectivity options at Ambala and Chandigarh not satisfactory as from both reach Delhi the same day.

I wouldn't call going to Kiratpur an experiment, even with 2 kids. This is a well known route for people wishing to travel by a rail/road combination from Manali to Delhi. (In fact, it doesn't work that well in the other direction, because you have to depend of the buses from Delhi/Chandigarh to stop there). But if you are on a bus from Manali, the bus people will be happy to stop for you. Since you took a car quote, can you please also get a car quote to Kiratpur from Manali? I'd be interested to know, for my reference.

As for Chandigarh, why not consider travelling by the Kalka Howrah Mail? Leaves at 01:00 AM, arrives at Old Delhi at 6:30 AM, leaving you plenty of time to catch your flight at 12:30 PM. The kids could easily fall asleep at the Chandigarh waiting room under adult supervision I understand there's an AC waiting room at Chandigarh now.

PS: From which terminal are you flying out? If it is terminal 2 or 3, you could take the Yellow line on the Delhi Metro from Chandni Chowk to New Delhi, and the world-class and surreal (at least for me), the Airport Metro Express to the airport.

PS: Since you are from Ambernath, are to flying to Mumbai or Pune? How are you planning to get to your hometown from the nearest airport?

In Tirunelveli, if you get time do visit the Nellaiappar temple. And if you do that in the evening see if you get a chance to taste the halwa at Iruttukadai Halwa Shop opposite the temple. The shop opens only in the evening and closes once the freshly prepared halwa is over.

The shop shown below is the one you should look for.

Chennai tip: I don't know which train you're catching, but if you want to save some time and money, there is a local station called Tirusulam, next to the airport. Take the local to Tambaram or Chengalpettu, and catch your Tirunelveli train from there.

Perhaps you may want to do sight seeing in Chennai, in that case your plans may be different.

Thanks for the tip aarosh will definitely try it. In fact the marriage hall is near to Nellaiappar Temple.

catcat1 - I am taking the Nellai exp leaving Egmore at 20.10. Yes I will be taking the local train from Trisulam to Egmore. As for sightseeing I don't know how much I can do, considering arrival at Chennai being 15.30.
