Kolkatans consider it pleasant because it is slightly less hot than in May, and slightly less humid than in August. In other words it is relatively pleasant. But in fact the maximum temperature is mostly over 30C, which is not at all "pleasant".

By the end of October the temperature has dropped a bit, and some Kolkatans start wearing sweaters and scarves so they will not "catch cold", even though the temperature may be well above 25C.

I spent my college years riding the 2B to/from College Street, dripping with sweat standing in the crowded bus and marveling at people wearing sweaters.

Hello Amoy_fish,
I have no idea which part of China you happen to be from, but one thing is for sure - Kolkata is bound to be warmer than most parts of China in October. Expect highs of 31-32C and lows of 23-24C, with a fair deal of humidity. If you are lucky - depending on how you see it of course - there might be some rainfall too.

If you do plan to visit Calcutta in October, try and make it between the 15th-19th. This is when the state's biggest festival - Durga Puja - takes place. It is as big - if not bigger - than your Dragon Festival and is well worth the trip. However, do make your hotel bookings in advance as thousands of tourists visit Calcutta to see the festivities.

Do let me know if you require any further information regarding your trip to our "City of Joy".

Thanks RPG. Yes 'relatively' pleasant should be the apt phrase for October weather in Kolkata. With absolute lucidity you have sketched faces of lesser mortals, the Kolkatans. An enjoyable read indeed !
