Where do I get the new Kolkata taxi fare chart which will help in converting the meter fare? Or is it a simple case of multiplying the fare by a factor?

Now the minimum fare of Taxi is Rs 30 for the first 2 Kms. Thereafter Rs 3 for every 200 meters ( .2 km ). Apart from this you need to pay Rs 5 , if you are carrying luggage

Thanks! My question is how do I know how many kilometres I have traveled? The taxi meter, from what I understand, has not been calibrated. Therefore, I was wondering how to figure this out from the meter.

During the transition period ( till meters are calibrated ) all taxis would continue to use the old meters showing the distance covered & the old rate . Drivers will carry a rate conversation chart with them.

Yes, indeed. Thanks! Though it is not clear any of this is going to be worth the while, see: https://www.telegraphindia.com/calcu...cutta-new-stry

Taxi refusal and demands for more money are nothing new. Even the taxis that say "no refusal" on the side of the car will refuse to take passengers.

It would be naive to expect that raising the fare slightly will solve the problem---taxis are still dirt-cheap, yet petrol costs the same as elsewhere in the world and much more than in the US. Rs 5 for luggage is almost an insult, either it should be free or it should be Rs. 50.

This is why many of us have switched to Uber, it costs more but there is less hassle, AC, and the cars are cleaner. (I rarely find Ola availability in our neighborhood, or I would use them to keep money in Indian hands.) I do see the taxi drivers' point of view...it should be a free market. If it is not worthwhile for the driver to take a passenger, he should not be forced to go.

Of course, it is amazing how many taxi drivers are more interested in sitting around and having tea than in making some money. Maybe it's cultural...they have made as much money as they need for the day, so why make more?
