We're going to need transportation TO Kolkata airport at 1am. We don't live close to a major road where drivers might be sleeping in their parked taxis, so Uber/Ola work well for us. However, I have not tested availability at 1am.

Do you have any direct experience of getting Uber/Ola past midnight? I know there's no guarantee on a particular day at a particular place, but are drivers generally active at that hour? (Not central Kolkata; near Bagha Jatin.)

PS Advance booking on these systems just auto-initiates a booking a few minutes before the scheduled time---it does not actually guarantee a ride if no drivers are active. Megacabs can be booked in advance, but I don't trust them because I've had them fail to turn up.

It's 1: 25 am now.

Just done a test booking on Uber.

Booked a cab from a location near Bagha Jatin ( precisely from Satyajit Roy Film Institute to Airport ).

Cab booked within 15 secs & the driver was on his way.

Cancelled the trip & replying to your query

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! (Although the driver may feel differently. This is why they often don't move at all for the first 5-10 min!)

Even if micro/mini/prime are not available, the OLA rental will be available.

I have taken Uber's to Airport a lot of times during 12 AM - 4 AM window. They are available easily. Not an issue at all.

It depends on location and weather sometimes.

The advantage of rental is that it does not have dynamic pricing. (If you are travelling in Durga puja time be prepared for a 2X price)

Uber and Ola are available at all times, in most major cities. Sometimes you may have to wait a little longer if you want one in rush hour, but at this time (1 am) it shouldn't be an issue at all. I don't much like Uber though. Their surge pricing is the worst. Ola is only slightly better, if at all.

Here's my actual experience. Booked Uber, it said 4 min, this turned into 20 min after car was assigned. Car made its way towards us, then called and asked where we wanted to go (I told him). It then "started" the trip even though he hadn't picked us up; minutes later he ended the trip and drove away. (Uber refunded the money upon complaint, but I don't know that the drivers suffer any consequences. Uber did say that our negative review would not go in the driver's record.)

The second car was another 20 min because it was also far away. For 15 min it drove towards us, then he called and asked where we were going, because he "needed to eat". I refused to tell him the destination before he arrived.

Suddenly it was replaced by another car on Uber's system without any participation from us. This car, described as Premier or something 'at no extra cost', did arrive in another 10 min, although he called and said something about needing petrol. The car had only one working headllight, it rattled and wheezed like a kaali-peeli taxi, and the driver smelled faintly of alcohol. He never got petrol. His bio said he spoke six languages, including French, German and Filipino. He did not.

If I had not left lots of leeway, we would have missed our flight. I realize this is anecdotal evidence and not necessarily representative of the experiences of others, but it is possible that only the bottom of the barrel is working in the wee hours.

RPG, thanks for the post, you are not a new member, and you also have plenty of posts, so I personally find your post helpful.

Of course experience may vary from state to state, but it helps to be forewarned.

I used to use Uber all the time when I go to India..However on my recent trip to Delhi and Agra , I have changed over to Ola .

OLA gives you a passcode which you tell the driver when they arrive. Only then will the driver know where you are going. i am not sure if Uber tells the drivers your destination.

Also the cars seemed to be of a better standard than the Uber cars .

Ola also lets you book a outstation car several days before the trip.
