Hello Everyone,

I am in Kolkata for the first time with my family (2 adults and 2 kids) and seek your advice.

On our return from Sikkim via Kolkata we have 7-8 hours wait time in Kolkata. We will reach Sealdah railway station at 7AM and our flight is at 5:00 PM.

Please suggest
1. a good decent hotel to freshen up. Preferably hotel close to either railway station or sight seeing place or airport.
2. 3-4 hours of sight seeing - places which kids (aged 10 and 4) enjoy.
3. Any tips on hiring taxi (pick up from Sealdah station to hotel , local sight seeing for 2-3 hours and drop at airport)

Thanks in advance,
Vinitha

1. There are a many hotels near the airport on the VIP road(kazi Nazrul Islam sarani). These hotels are between airport and Baguihati.
2. There are no good sight seeing places around but there is a mall - Citi center 2 - which the kids may enjoy. The sight seeing places are mostly near the esplanade area which will not be very convenient to you

You really don't have much time. My suggestion at the outset will be please see if you can reschedule your flight, and spend a night in Cal. If you take the next day's flight at 5 pm, you may just have enough time to take a glimpse of city.

Three-four hours may simply be not enough for sight-seeing, but here's what I would recommend in the time you can squeeze in

1) A tram ride for the kids - from Esplanade to Race course & back (1 hour)
2) A ride on a launch from Fairlie Place to Howrah & back (1 hour). Fairlie place is near BBD Bag. Try to do this in the morning. Afternoon will be hot.
3) Coffee at floating restaurant at the Ganges, not far from Fairlie Place
4) A visit to Flurry's Cake Shop, at Park Street, Grab snacks
5) If you are more hungry, have lunch at Peter Cat, Park Street
6) Visit a sweet shop - Ganguram, or Balram Mallick at Bhowanipur

I don't know your budget for a stay, but if you don't mind spending a bit, hotel kenilworth off Camac Street could be a good central location, from where all these places are 2-3 km at most. Hotel Hindustan International on Lower Circular Road could be another option. I am not an authority on hotels, you should go by suggestions of other members. The City of Joy deserves more than 3-4 hours. Have a great time.

Get a taxi from Sealdah pre-paid taxi booth. Go to Science city. There are few Hotels including Sonar Bangla too. Spend some time in Science city for kids pleasure. Then go for Airport. Get taxis separately for station to hotel and hotel to airport. AC bus for airport will be available from there too.

You really have not much more time.

Thanks everyone for your valuable suggestions.

We have booked a hotel in Salt Lake City. Our flight is at 5:00 PM. So please suggest if the following can be done:

1. Science City : How much time does it take from Salt Lake City to Science City ? How much would the taxi cost us?
How much time should be reserved at Science City? Will my 4 year old also enjoy this place or is it for older kids?

2. Lunch/Snack at Peter Cat, Park Street : Have lunch/snack at Park Street and if possible a tram ride and back to the hotel at Salt Lake City and then to airport.
3.A tram ride for the kids - from Esplanade to Race course & back (1 hour)

You dont have enough time for all these.
You have to be in the airport by 3.30 pm.
Take a cab from the hotel to science city - should not be more than 150.
Spend around 2 hrs.
while comming back have lunch at one of the restaurants in silver spings(its on the way, very near to science city). You can have lunch at Oh Calcutta - its famous for bengali food.
Get back to our hotel by 2pm, freshen up and leave for the airport by 3 at the latest.

+ 1 to Nayan. For lunch, you can also try the China town area for Chinese food or Arsalan in Park Circus if you love Biriyani! Both the places are not far from Science City/ Salt Lake.
