Hello All,

I know hotel threads abound on the forum, but in the case of Kolkata they are all very old. So please forgive another post

I will regularly be spending 1-2 nights in Kolkata as I am working elsewhere in West Bengal. When there I will be accessing the state archives and perhaps the Asiatic Society Library.

At present I have been splurging a bit when going to Kolkata - spending Rs 4500 - 5500 per night on a hotel. I should probably rein that habit in a bit though. I am looking at hotels in the Rs3000 - 4000 range. My budget does not require me to go truly budget or stay at backpacker dives.

Has anyone stayed at the Fairlawn recently? Or can you recommend something else with clean rooms, reasonably comfortable beds and Wi-Fi (preferably free)?

Many thanks for the assistance

any first-hand accounts

@Dan - yes I saw that in the Telegraph as well. It does worry me a bit but ...

Thank you everyone for the suggestions - however, does anyone have any first-hand (and relatively recent) experience with any of these options? I am always weary of putting too much confidence in Trip Advisor.

Hi Natasha,

You could PM Zahondo who stayed at the Fairlawn on her trip in March 2012.

We stayed at the Fairlawn in January 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed it. We have just rebook ed for our trip next year.

The place may not be to everybody's taste but suits us just fine.

Hotel 233 Park Street. I was looking to possibly stay there as well. With the current exchange rate, even the Oberoi Grand is a bargain!!

http://www.233parkstreet.com/

i think it is a bit more than you want to spend though.

I know what you mean about tripadvisor, but you can tell a lot by reading the reviews in detail and seeing how often the writer has posted.

i'll be in CCu October 20-24. You?

rebeccam,
That looks like a rather interesting find. What is the nearest metro to 233 Park Street ? I just read that it is a brand new hotel. How did you discover it ?

To the OP - I have till now favoured the Lytton, but last time we stayed there we had a slight problem with their scatty bill-keeping. I am not 100 % sure I will return.

We also stayed at the Peerless once. The room was undersized, the bar and restaurant were outrageously overpriced and we had an argument about the bill. I would not go back there.

Off-Topic:

How about a thread in each city forum of hotels in which not to stay?

Many thanks

Many thanks to those who have posted first-hand reviews (and warnings!). The current exchange rate most definitely puts many more options "within budget" which is lovely! Though the chance to save a bit extra is also appreciated. Perhaps I will try 233 Park Street next time - it looks good.

I am staying at the Tulip Inn for the next few nights. Not sure when I will next return Rebeccam - but if you PM me closer to your dates I will let you know, always nice to meet new people. (I currently work about 100km from CCU - and will be going to the city every 4-6 weeks)

It will be good if you can write about your experiences in the various hotels you are staying in Kolkata. It will definitely help others.
